George Douglas Obituary

George James Douglas XVII Died on Sunday, November 30, 2008, of lung cancer, in his home of over 50 years, with his wife Jacky by his side. George was born in San Francisco March 5, 1926. He attended Farragut Grammar School, Aptos Junior High, and Balboa High School. Before graduating from Balboa, he left school and was inducted in the United States Navy on May 20, 1944, and proudly served as a boatswain's mate second class in the Asiatic Pacific American Area Victory, Philippines. George honorably separated from the Navy on May 14, 1946 and returned to Balboa to receive his diploma. On Dec. 31, 1947, he married Jacqueline Gorgas Detsch and then raised four daughters. After working with partners in a fire protection engineering company, he and Jacky bought a 28 ft Monterey double ender fishing boat, the first "Wacky Jacky." This endeavor sparked a new business. After hocking everything except their daughters, they bought a new boat, and the passion of fishing became their life. Jacky's, "Sailor Boy," became the head cheerleader, maintaining and caring for their new adventure, and stated that "you are the only captain I'm going to kiss." He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, Post 9241. He loved fishing, football, remodeling homes, and could fix anything leading to the call, "let George do it." On June 3, he celebrated his 37th year of sobriety. George's love, internal strength and wonderful sense of humor is greatly missed by his wife Jacky, to whom he was married nearly 61 years; daughter Diana Fischer and her husband Ed Fischer; daughter Lucinda Douglas; daughter Roni Douglas and her husband Marty Ganulin; brother Bill Douglas and sister Mary Del Bene; grandson Kevin Douglas Bouey and his wife Kristin who is soon to deliver great-grandson, Quinn James Bouey, and granddaughter Caitlin Bouey; niece Joanne Del Bene and nephew Brandt Douglas and his wife Denise. His daughter Johanna Douglas sadly passed away in 2001 at the age of 49. A Celebration of Life will be held on Wed., Dec. 17, 2008, at the Fishermen's and Seamen's Memorial Chapel, Pier 45, Fisherman's Wharf, SF, at 1:30 pm. Contributions in his honor may be sent to "Fishermen's and Seamen's Memorial Chapel" c/o Al Baccari, 430 West Portal Ave., SF CA 94127, or UCSF Foundation Cancer Center, PO Box 45339 SF, CA 94145-0339.
