George Petropoulos Obituary

George G. Petropoulos Passed away unexpectedly on March 28, 2009 in Sacramento CA. Born in Longa, Greece to Constantine (Gus) Petropoulos and Olga Caferia on Dec. 8, 1916, he arrived in the US with his mother and brother, John, in 1927, his father having already established a home for the family in Lincoln, CA. He was an entrepreneur having established a chain of grocery stores and then a Greek sandwich business renown for its 20 foot sandwiches. He also taught school and business college and ran for Supervisor in San Francisco in 1951. He retired and has been living in Sacramento for the past 30 years. He was a man of indomitable spirit and will be missed. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Edna; and was the caring father of Gus (Linda Longley) of Burlingame; Betty Jean of Glyfada, Greece; Georgette (Michael Popoff) of San Francisco; and Dean; and caring step-father of Vernon Shuman (Lola) of Kansas, and Robert Shuman (Sharon) of Folsom. Also, survived by three grandchildren, seven step-grand children, and nine step-great grandchildren. Predeceased by his brother John and sister-in-law Chrissy Petropoulos. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, April 2 at 2 pm at the Greek Orthodox Memorial Park, Colma, CA. Arrangements made by Crosby N. Gray & Co, Burlingame, CA (650)342-6617. Memorial contributions can be made to the San Mateo County Community Colleges Foundation, 3401 CSM Drive, San Mateo CA 94402, or to the Holy Trinity Church, 999 Brotherhood Way, San Francisco, CA 94132.

Dear Gus and Petropoulos Family,

We never met George but by knowing Gus we knew he had to be a great man. We are sad your father is gone, but you have comfort in knowing that he will always be with you in your thoughts.

Ron, Maggie (mom) and I were saddened to hear of George's unexpected passing. We have fond memories of the many hours we spent with both of you, sharing meals at Merrill Gardens. I have forwarded the news on to Wayne.

Petropoulos Family,
I was very sad to hear about Mr. Petropoulos passing. I have helped him many times since I started working at the Golden 1 on Elkhorn and it was always my pleasure to assist him. I will miss seeing him.
