George Tway Obituary

George Shuster Tway, Jr. ("Jim") Mar 22, 1924 - Nov 24, 2011 Succumbed on Nov 24, Pacifica, Ca, of natural causes. Mr. Tway was a native of San Francisco, the son of George S Tway and Besseye O'Grady. He is preceded in death by his loving "big" sister Joan F. Soukup. He leaves behind son George S. Tway, III (Merrilyn), daughter Debora E. Powell (Steve) both of San Jose, son James M. Tway of Pacifica, daughter Vicki L. Vandivier of Santa Clara, grandchildren Nichole Vandivier, Michael and Samuel Powell, & Jason Starmer; many nieces, nephews, and loving friends. "Jim" wore many 'hats' during his lifetime. At age 13 he was a parts & delivery person for HAPS Jones Motorcycles; at 15 he was offered an apprenticeship to become a tool & die maker at Mare Island, Vallejo. At age 17 his parents granted him permission to serve his country and he joined the US Army. While aboard a Coast Guard ship he toured the South Pacific as a machinist, was discharged in 1945 with the rank of Sergeant, and returned to Mare Island as a Tool & Die maker. Appx 1948 he and best friend Milo Soukup bought a bar, the "Club Unique" in SF; they did quite well and purchased another bar 5 years later, the A&D- "Ahearn and Dewey" Irish pub, which was the largest bar on Castro St. In 1968, in addition to running the bar, Jim attended John O'Connell High School adult ed, to become a certified pipe welder, and was certified in 1968 at Standard Oil Refinery in Richmond, CA. In 1973 he was initiated into Local 38 as a steam fitter. He finished his work career in 1991 with the SF Dept of Public Works, employed as a steam fitter for 18 years. Jim's favorite "hat" however, was that of being a father and grandfather. He was loving, supportive, just an absolutely incredible father, and adored his grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by his family and all who were fortunate enough to know him. A 'Celebration of Life' will be held Thurs, Dec 1, 11:00 am, Duggan's Serra Family Mortuaries, 500 Westlake Ave., Daly City, CA. Interment to follow at Cypress Lawn, 1370 El Camino Real, Colma, CA.

Dad's infamous pineapple upside-down cake, made every year for every holiday, baked in his old cast iron skillet.It was always sooo yummy!
