Gerald Hanks Obituary

Dr. Gerald E. Hanks died at his home In Tiburon, California on December 20, 2017 of pneumonia at the age of 83. Dr. Hanks was one of the leading contributors to clinical research and technology development in the treatment of prostate cancer and quality assurance studies in radiation oncology. As a result of his work more men were cured of their disease and had fewer side effects of treatment.Dr. Hanks was born in Ellensburg, Washington on September 21, 1934. He graduated from Washington State College and received his medical degree from Washington University in St. Louis. He served as chairman of the department of radiation oncology at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia where he was with honored with the creation of the Gerald E. Hanks endowed chair in radiation oncology.
Dr. Hanks devoted his career to improving the outcome of men with prostate cancer. His legacy continues with the many residents and faculty he trained and mentored as well as the many men who benefited from his innovative and visionary research and treatment. He is survived by his wife Dr. Barbara Fowble, 4 children (Dr. Stephen Hanks of Tucson, Arizona; Michael Hanks of White Salmon, Washington; Kimberly Hanks of Trinidad, California; Leslie Hanks Angelacci of Pleasant Hill, California), 10 grandchildren and one great grandchild. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice by the Bay Marin, 17 Sir Francis Drake Blvd., Larkspur, CA 94939.

As a member of Jerry's high school class of 1952 in Ellensburg, WA, I speak for our class when I say we are proud that we knew the dynamic student athlete of the 50's. We saw Jerry at the 35th and 50th class reunions, where he enjoyed remembering his days at EHS. Unfortunately, we were not fully aware of his international celebrity and only recently learned of his death. It is an astonishing legacy Dr. Gerald Hanks leaves, and we will remember what an impact he had on so many lives. It is our community's honor to recognize him as a renowned pioneer in radiation oncology and as a mentor to so many.

Sorry to hear of Gerry's passing. He was my boss on the Patterns of Care Study until I resigned my position in 1990. I recall him as a tough, demanding leader who made us all better. My sympathies to his family.
