Gerard Hinckley Obituary

Gerard "Jerry" Hinckley
March 4, 1942 - June 26, 2021
Gerard J. Hinckley ("Jerry"), beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother was welcomed into the Kingdom of Heaven on June 26, 2021 after a long illness. He was surrounded by his loving wife Marianne, children, grandchildren and friends at the time of his passing in Pleasant Hill, CA. Jerry and Marianne shared nearly 58 years of happy marriage together, the last 48 years living in Walnut Creek, CA.
Jerry was born in New York City, NY on March 4, 1942 to George and Gertrude Hinckley, also of New York City. Jerry was the second youngest of ten children and he loved and cherished his siblings: Delores, George, Anne, Grace, Walter, Barbara, Joan, Virginia, and Clare.
Jerry was raised in New York City's upper-west side neighborhood (Columbus Avenue and West 90th Street) and attended Fordham Prep High School in the Bronx where he played football. In 1960 he attended college at Marquette University in Milwaukee where he met the love of his life, Marianne Jemsek of Chicago, IL who was also a student at Marquette. Jerry and Marianne were married on August 31, 1963 in West Chicago, IL at St. Andrews Golf and Country Club, a special place they would return to years later to oversee and help manage.
In 1967, Jerry graduated from St. Johns Law School in New York and began his professional career as a trial attorney, joining first the Manhattan District Attorney's office and then the Department of Justice as a member of the Manhattan Joint Strike Force. In 1973 he transferred to the Strike Force in San Francisco where he served until leaving in 1981 to start his own criminal defense practice. In addition to his years as a trial lawyer, Jerry worked alongside his wife Marianne as President of St. Andrews Golf and Country Club in West Chicago, IL from 2002-2020. Jerry was a long-time member of St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Walnut Creek, CA.
Jerry's love and legacy live on through his children and grandchildren, Gerard Joseph Hinckley, Jr. of Johns Creek, GA (married to Mollie McGinnis Hinckley), Mike Hinckley of Walnut Creek, CA (married to Devorah Levine Hinckley), Robert Walter Hinckley of Boise, ID (married to Serena Schriber Hinckley), and James Joseph Hinckley of Alamo, CA (married to Ramie Smith Hinckley); in addition to eleven grandchildren, Mason, Grace, Garrett, Hannah, Daniel, Grace, Jonah, Bryn, Caden, Emma, and Emily, and many wonderful friends and relatives including Walter and Pat Hinckley of Chapel Hill, NC, Clare and Bob Kearns of Naples, FL, and Frank Jemsek of Palos Park, IL.
Jerry loved being with family and friends, playing golf, going to the track, watching baseball, basketball, and football, and playing with his grandchildren. But most of all he loved being together with the love of his life, Marianne.
Friends and relatives are invited to a Memorial Mass, 11:00 am, Saturday, July 10th at St. Stephen Catholic Church 1101 Keaveny Ct., Walnut Creek. Please offer condolences at www.oakparkhillschapel.com

Because Gerry Hinckley was such a just lawyer and contributed to Irish Forum, I gave him my big framed black and white photo portrait of Pres Lincoln (without beard). God Bless, Gerry. Pat G.

Jerry and I met in the early 80s in a Civic Center watering hole for the City Hall, State and Fed folks., including Don Jacobson and Tom Kotowski. Jerry served on the Board of the San Francisco Irish Forum promoting dialogue and a peaceful solution for the "Troubles" in Northern Ireland. Jerry's contributions of fair mindedness and genuine friendships are appreciated and not forgotten.
Blessings on the Hinckley family.

Gerry was a great friend, a role model for Northern Dist. of California Asst. U.S. attorneys and a zealous attorney for his clients. He was magnanimous to all who knew him and a exemplary father and loving husband.

My sincere condolences. Our offices in the NYDA´s office were next to each other and we worked some cases and had a lot of fun together. A fine lawyer and an equally fine human being.
