Gordon Salter Obituary

Gordon Thomas Salter Passed away on October 28 at age 70 at his home in Lincoln, CA, with his partner of 16 years, Robert Fong, his feline companion Miss Kitty, and several close friends at his side. Gordon was known to many as a lover of the arts and a demanding gourmand. He was born in Middleborough, MA, but he traveled early in his life to Miami Beach, where he became close friends with the late entertainer Charles Pierce. He later moved from Florida to New York where he lived in Brooklyn and worked in Manhattan. In 1966, he moved to San Francisco where he had a 15 year career with Pacific Bell, retiring in 1981. After retiring from Pacific Bell, he worked for a travel agency and volunteered for the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, Shanti, Kairos House and the Performing Arts Library and Museum. In SF, he occasionally performed with Charles Pierce at the legendary Gilded Cage. He had a wonderful singing voice and outgoing personality and participated in a number of shows and musical events in the Bay Area. He was a lover of classical music and attended weekly NY Philharmonic concerts and Metropolitan Opera performances in New York, where he met singers such as Leonie Rysanek and Birgit Nilsson (with whom he maintained a lifelong friendship). He was a frequent attendee of the SF Opera as well as the SF Symphony. He had a wide circle of friends in SF, Volcano (Hawaii) and Lincoln. He loved movies and often hosted viewing parties at his home in San Francisco and after he moved to Lincoln in 2004. Gordon will be sorely missed by his many friends who loved him. He had a wonderful and generous heart which he shared with his friends and the many charities to which he contributed. No memorial service is planned. Contributions in his memory should be made to The Save-the-Redwoods League, 114 Sansome St., San Francisco, CA 94104.

Gordon was a one-of-a-kind person who loved life more than anyone I've ever known. He was my first & favorite co-worker when I joined PacBell 20+ years ago. I will never forget his generosity and kindness to me and to a huge number of friends and loved ones. Each week we did several hospital visitations together and were so grateful for our health and well-being. I will miss Gordon and can't yet imagine the world without him. Robert, please let me know if there is anything that I can do to support you, especially in this time of grief.

Robert: Gordon will be missed by Richard and I. We enjoyed his stories of New York and San Francisco. Also enjoyed his cooking and the dinners we had with you and Gordon. A kind and gentle spirit lives on among the stars. That is how we will think of 'our' Gordon. He touched our lives deeply with his passions for the animals, the environment and the less fortunate. Fond memories of him will be in our hearts forever. And, much love to you Robert during this time.

My eternal friend whom I thought would be here forever is no longer a phone call away. I still cannot get used to that. Gordon was my oldest friend since we met in 1966 in San Francisco. We remained close for forty years with some great times. Gor, I will miss you. Love, Ger
