Gregory Rhodes Obituary

Gregory Rhodes, M.D.
08/30/1947 - 09/27/2024
With great sadness and love, we announce the death of Gregory Alan Rhodes.
Greg was born on July 30, 1947 to Alice Thune Rhodes and Harvey Benjamin Rhodes in Modesto, and was proudly part of the sixth generation of the Rhodes family to call Northern California home. He spent his childhood in Modesto and graduated from Davis High School in 1965.
He attended University of California, Berkeley, graduating in 1969 with honors and a BA in History and a BS in Zoology.
Greg went on to medical school at University of California, Davis, graduating in 1975. Following his passion for surgery, he joined the General Surgery residency program at University of California, San Diego, 1976-1980, and served as Chief Resident. He completed a fellowship in Vascular Surgery at Scripps Clinic in La Jolla in 1981. There he met his future wife, Sally Davis MD who was completing her fellowship in Cardiology.
After finishing their fellowships, Greg and Sally returned to Northern California in 1982. Greg established a private surgery practice in Walnut Creek, which he maintained for over 40 years. Through his career, he worked diligently to better the medical community for patients, doctors, and other healthcare professionals. As chairman of the Contra Costa County Emergency Medical Care Committee from 1984 to 1989, he helped plan the first trauma center in Contra Costa County at John Muir Hospital, where he served as a trauma surgeon.
In 2009, he founded Bay Area Surgical Specialists (BASS) Medical Group, with a vision of providing excellent medical care while retaining physician autonomy. He served as president of BASS Medical Group from 2009 until his retirement in 2022. BASS medical group now cares for thousands of patients and employs hundreds of medical providers in the Bay Area.
Greg was a devoted father and cherished spending time with his four children. Despite his busy work schedule, he coached their baseball, basketball, and soccer teams for over 20 years, and was ejected from fewer than 10 games during that time. As a life-long Giants fan and season-ticket holder since 1982, he passed on his devotion to the San Francisco Giants to his children and grandchildren with stories about the dynasty years of 2010, 2012 and 2014.
Greg loved to gather around the table with family and friends - from the Costco trip beforehand, to preparing the meal, and later enjoying it with company and a good glass of reasonably priced cabernet sauvignon.
He instilled his love of the outdoors and passion for protecting the environment through family hikes, camping trips, yearly backpacking trips in the High Sierra, and driving Priuses for the last 22 years of his life.
Pop-Pop's seven grandchildren share his passions for going to Giants games, riding on lawnmowers in Sonora, bird-watching, playing cards, and doing jigsaw puzzles.
Greg is survived by his loving wife Sally Davis Rhodes, sister Sandy Conti (Rich), daughter Jessica Rhodes (Ian Fein), son Jake Rhodes (Meghan), daughter Jane Martin (Andy), and his seven grandchildren – Jack and Annabelle Fein; Cecily and Emilia Rhodes; Charlie, Harvey and Hank Martin.
He was predeceased by his mother Alice Thune Rhodes, father Harvey Benjamin Rhodes, step mother Patricia Hertert Rhodes, brother Gary "Butch" Rhodes, and son John Gregory Rhodes.

Greg was a dear friend with a remarkable insight into Baseball and the political arena who kindred caring spirit is a rare commodity these days. His devotion to an extended family is also perhaps his unique hallmark especially given the huge demands of his practice. This willingness to do the right thing and not just talk about it was remarkable especially in creating improvements in our health care system. He will be profoundly missed

We are heartbroken. Dr. Rhodes was always incredibly kind and welcomed us here as if we were family. Greg and Sally´s character were part of the reason we chose Walnut Creek as our home. They also organized a baby shower for us when we had just moved here and didn´t have a village yet as new parents. They shared their family and their mentorship and that made all the difference.

Greg was a role model and a leader in this community who improved so many lives with his work and legacy over the years. Lives of colleagues, patients, families, and friends of those he helped. Our deepest condolences to his family.

Entire medical community, the entire community has lost a very caring bright light. I met this man at a time when I needed somebody to remind me of my father. I worked with Dr. Rhodes for many years write down to making his dentist appointments. Often I called him my curmudgeon. But he and Sally were to the most amazing examples of quality people that I have met in the Bay Area.
