Mike Richter was helpful to me as a beginning lawyer, and solicited recommendations from me on behalf of my students when I became a law professor. He was a wonderful friend and mentor.

Mike was a wonderful teacher and mentor. Here's a memory from my first summer at Pillsbury.
"Mike had a trial in San Jose on behalf of the owner of an apartment complex that was suing a contractor because a balcony railing had failed injuring a tenant. Analysis had disclosed that the contractor had used watered-down concrete. Every morning Mike would pick me up on a street corner and we would drive down to San Jose for the trial in Superior Court. I sat in the audience and could only communicate with Mike during breaks. But the trial was valuable because I learned about "hometowning." Our opponent was a well-known local lawyer with whom the judge was very friendly. Almost any objection he made was sustained. I remember one exchange involving our client's apartment manager. Mike was asking him questions about the condition of the concrete and whether the railings appeared to be safe. No matter how he phrased the question, an objection was sustained, usually on the ground that the manager had not qualified as an expert. Mike turned around in frustration and looked at me. Then his eyes lit up; he turned around and asked the witness: "did you ever try to lean over the balcony railings?" Immediately, the witness shot back "never, they were unsafe." The jury was amused, the judge and opposing counsel were not. I thought to myself, I can learn something from him."

Our sincerest condolences to all of the family. We have wonderful memories of our outdoor adventures with Mike and Ann - canoeing the Missouri, being blown away in tents in the Mohave. Our paths have crossed fewer times in recent years, but Mike kept us smiling with his plentiful jokes online. We've stopped by and had lunch from time to time but its never quite enough. We will miss him.
as our David said "he was a good guy."
