Harry Gilbert Obituary

Roy Gilbert Harry Roy Gilbert died on July 14 in San Francisco at the age of 93. "Roy" as he was known to family and friends was born in the City on November 15, 1914. He graduated from Commerce High and attended McMaster Paine Business College. He served in the Civil Conservation Corps before joining the U.S. Navy. While serving in the South Pacific on the USS Makin Island, he received a commendation for heroism. During his 25 years in the Navy, he was also onboard the USS Cincinnati, USS Hancock and served on Treasure Island and Honolulu. In 1958 he joined the staff of the San Francisco 49ers. He worked in many aspects "behind the scenes" but his favorite assignment was representing the Niners at the annual draft. At a game in November 1984, Roy was unintentionally caught in a tackle. That year, he celebrated his 70th birthday in physical therapy along side some of his favorite players. After 32 years, Roy retired at the age of 76. As part of his retirement, he was honored with a lifetime pass to 49er games. He was very proud of his Super Bowl rings and wore one as he traveled the world. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothee and brother, Bob. He is survived by his son, Michael Gilbert of SF; daughter, Suzanne Gilbert McRae and granddaughter, Michelle McRae of Eugene, OR. Following his wishes, Roy's ashes will be buried at sea by the U.S. Navy. Memorial donations may be sent to the Curry Senior Center, 333 Turk St., SF, CA 94102.

Dear Suzanne and Michael,

My thoughts are with you both with the death of your father. I lived next door to them at "Ming Tree" in Belmont. Your parents were very special to me. I have many fond memories.

God's blessings,
Joanne Brandt
