Hartley Cravens Obituary

Hartley Dodge Cravens
January 29, 1935 - June 2, 2022
A native San Franciscan, Hartley Dodge Cravens died peacefully and without pain at his home on June 2, 2022. He was born to Martha Hurley Cravens and Malcolm Cravens in 1935. Hartley was educated at the Town School For Boys, the Hotchkiss School, and Stanford University.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Lou Myers; his five children, Martha Hurley Cravens, Malcolm Mark Cravens, Alice McCreery Cravens, Frank Norris Cravens, and Julia Cravens Whitney; his step children, Paul McDonald Myers, Stephen McDermott Myers, and Claire Louise Myers; and his four sisters, Susan Good, Brenda Cravens, Carol Cravens, and Joan Taylor. Hartley is also survived by his former wife, Nellie Norris Cravens, and his many loving grandchildren and great grandchildren.
After a stint in the Navy on the U.S.S. Bremerton in the Pacific, Hartley joined the family insurance firm of Cravens, Dargan, and Co. in San Francisco where he worked for decades. Hartley is remembered for his sense of humor, his gentlemanly qualities, and his kindness. Always a wonderful host, Hartley was an active member and former president of the Pacific-Union Club and the San Francisco Golf Club. He was also a board member of the Cypress Point Club – golf being one of his most beloved passions. Hartley loved music and was a patron of the arts, particularly the San Francisco Symphony and Opera. He was an avid foodie and loved to cook. Hartley played a mean game of dominoes and left a smile on the face of everyone he met.
A Mass to celebrate the life of Hartley Cravens will be held at St. Dominic's Church at 2390 Bush Street, San Francisco, on Tuesday, June 14, 2022 at 10am. There will be a reception following at the California Tennis Club, 1770 Scott St, San Francisco.

We send our sympathy, prayers, and condolences to Mary Lou and all the Cravens family. We have many fond memories of gourmet meals, fabulous travel and special hikes with Hartley and Mary Lou. Hartley was always full of vigor and enthusiasm, always happy and sharing of himself. We miss him. Love from Brooks and Chrissie.

Hartley; You have been a wonderful friend for many years! We met in the 70´s when I was a senior manager @ Bank of California. You helped me with PU Club entry and were always so pleasant and fun to be with! You will be greatly missed by your many friends!! Rob

There was a time when nearly everyone I knew in the insurance business either worked for one of the many Cravens businesses, or had worked. Including me and my husband, John.
Hartley was a charming man, who could chat on many subjects. I know he´ll be missed.
