Professor Herbert Fingarette, an eminent American philosopher who wrote influential and often controversial books on a remarkably wide range of subjects, died on November 2 in Berkeley, California, at the age of 97. Dear Herbert, You struggled with the meaning of life. Maybe our purpose is to find ways to help others find meaning in theirs. I suspect you've done that for many. I know you've helped me on my journey, and I never even met you. That's pretty profound.
