James Bastable Obituary

James Linwood Bastable

March 26,1928 - February 19, 2016

James L. Bastable, 87, a second generation native San Franciscan, died last month at AgeSong in Hayes Valley from complications of neurodegenerative disease. He had been in poor health for a number of years.

Jim was raised in the Sunset District, the only child of James S. Bastable and Wilma (Ginder) Bastable. He graduated from Lowell High School in 1946, the University of California at Berkeley in 1950 and earned a graduate degree from the Thunderbird School of Global Management in 1952. Jim then embarked on a 35-year career in international banking. Through his travels, Jim developed an appreciation of art from around the world. During his banking career he worked for First National City Bank, United California Bank and Bangkok Metropolitan Bank where Jim lived in Thailand for 14 years.

In 1987 Jim returned to San Francisco and opened a business importing and selling folk art from Southeast Asia.

Jim will be remembered for his sense of humor and as a captivating story teller. He was at ease socializing with friends and strangers from all walks of life.

Jim's friends express their gratitude to Vince Furfaro for his extraordinary service as Jim's caregiver.
