James Buckley Obituary

James D. Buckley
December 24, 1941 - December 31, 2022
We are saddened to share the passing of beloved uncle and good friend, James "Jim" Denis Buckley, age 81, of Cameron Park, California. Jim peacefully passed away, surrounded by family and friends, on December 31, 2022.
Jim was born on December 24, 1941 to Margaret Reid and William Francis Buckley in San Francisco. He was preceded in death by his brother, William J. Buckley and is survived by loving nieces Margaret Buckley Brown and Laura Buckley Reutter, along with five adoring great nieces and nephews.
Jim grew up in San Francisco's Richmond and Sunset districts, graduating from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1959. After working as an engineer on the Bay Bridge in the 1960s, Jim began a 30-plus year career at Cal State Hayward, where he earned a BA in Economics and an MBA from the College of Business and Economics, and retired as Assistant Vice President, Human Resources at CSU East Bay in 2001.
Jim had a passion for travel and learning about people in other cultures. Having visited scores of places around the world, he loved to share stories of his travels, especially those discovering the lands of his ancestors in Scotland and Ireland. His best travel advice? "Anywhere you go in the world, you can always find an Irish pub and a Jazz club." Closer to home, Jim shared his love of good local wines with visiting friends and family, turning many of them on to the delicious Zinfandels and Barberas of Eldorado County.
In retirement, as a member of The Rotary Club of Cameron Park, Jim became passionately committed to the good work of the club, including notable international projects in Nicaragua and The Philippines. Jim also led and supported local projects, including the Bicycle Give program, and a scholarship benefitting local high school seniors.
The family requests that friends and family who wish to honor Jim's life consider making a donation in his name to one of his favorite causes: Rotary Club of Cameron Park Nicaragua Water Project (World Wide Child Foundation) at wwcrf.org/donate/ ; Rotary Club of Cameron Park Scholarship fund (contact [email protected]) and National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD) at rarediseases.org.

Jim was a close friend and fellow Rotarian. We did share some wine together, over dozens of hours at his dining room table, working on Rotary treasurer reports, or sharing stories of world travels, or solving world problems.

Jim was an extraordinary individual, so caring of his family, and Rotarians, and the little girls in the Philippines that needed better water and medical care. At Rotary he always jumped in to help, with no fanfare. He was once received the Quiet Rotarian award.

Jim's stories of the Philippines work inspired me to pursue international efforts, that led to our current water project in La Calle Real in Nicaragua.
