James Houghton Obituary

James J. Houghton

Jim, 4th generation San Franciscan, passed away peacefully on August 2nd in NYC, at the young age of 57, having fought his cancer battle with grace and dignity. An extraordinary husband to Joyce O'Connor, dad to Lily and Henry, son to Sherrill and Joan (Heaney), brother to Scott, Susan Devine, Lynne, and Trish Line, adored uncle to wonderful nieces and nephews, devoted cousin and beloved brother-in-law.

Jim is credited with revitalizing American theater by founding the NYC Signature Theatre in 1991, dedicated to showcasing the works of just one playwright within a single season. As Signature's Artistic Director for 25 years, he hosted several iconic playwrights and received numerous awards including the coveted Regional Theatre Tony Award in 2014—the first in the NYC theater field. Jim also served as the Richard Rogers Director of Drama at Julliard for the last 10 years, changing the culture of the division and the lives of the artists with whom he worked.

Jim discovered his love for theater at St Ignatius College Prep ('76), continued at USF, Santa Clara (BA '81), SMU (MFA '86), honorary PHD from Santa Clara (2013). In NYC, Jim started as an actor joining John Houseman's Acting Company. As his career evolved he transitioned over time to directing and theater administration. He pursued his love of theater with a unique passion, character, kindness and dedication until his final days.

Jim was fearless from the day he arrived until his last; personifying a one-of-a-kind spirit that welcomed all with open arms, humor and life-long friendship. Most importantly, he was the best husband, dad, son, brother, uncle, cousin and friend in the whole-wide world.

A celebration of Jim's life will be held Saturday, August 27, 2016 at 1:00 pm at the Orradre Chapel, St. Ignatius College Prep, 2001 37th Ave, San Francisco.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to SI College Prep Drama Program, afterworktheater.org and danielsmusic.org.

Jim generously helped us get tickets for 4 plays in NYC in 2015 and he didn't even know us! One of the plays was at the Signature theater which turned out to be our favorite venue. What a terrific spot for his memory and work to live on.

Dear Sue and Family,

Please accept my deepest condolences for the loss of your brother Jimmy. I remember him as just a little tyke at Our Lady of Mercy running around the playground. My deepest thoughts and prayers go out to your parents, Jim's wife and children and the whole Houghton clan. May you find comfort that Jim is no longer suffering and he is in the loving arms of his God. Sincere sympathies being sent your way.

Much love,
