James Smith Obituary

James Frederick Smith Born June 2, 1914; at rest February 20, 2008 following a brief illness. Jim was a native San Franciscan, and resided there many years prior to moving to Marin County, where he made Larkspur his home for the past 42 years. A brief, yet memorable part of his childhood was spent in rural Colusa County. Jim graduated from San Francisco High School of Commerce and went on to College of San Mateo, excelling in football and basketball at both schools. While at Commerce, Jim met Adele Albury. They would go on to be married in 1936 and have their only child, daughter Carol in 1938. Following graduation, Jim found employment with the United States Postal Service, where he remained for the next 41 years. Advancing through many stations and positions, his last assignment prior to retirement was supervisor of San Francisco's Rincon Annex Station. Even before retirement, gardening was a much enjoyed part of Jim's life. Friends were always amazed by his talent for growing spectacular begonias, roses, fuchsias, camellias and bonsai, all of which soon turned a new home into a blooming showcase. Upon retirement Jim was able to devote all of his time to his gardening endeavors, as well as many construction projects around the house, this truly made it his and Adele's dream home. Besides gardening, Jim enjoyed classical music, especially Strauss, a game of chess, daily crossword puzzles, unwavering devotion to the San Francisco 49ers and was a long time member of the S.F. S.I.R.s Bridge Club. James F. Smith was a dear husband, doting father and proud grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 72 years Adele, and grandson James Byrnes, both of Larkpsur. He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter Carol (Smith) Byrnes in 2002. At his request no formal services will be held. The family wishes to thank our many friends for their caring messages, beautiful cards and flowers and abundant, good food.
