Janice Murphy Obituary

Janice Kathryn Murphy
June 6, 1956 – October 14, 2021
Janice Kathryn Murphy (Janice Kay, Jan, Mimi) – caring wife, daughter, mother, grandmother, and friend – left this world too soon on October 14, 2021 at age 65 after a months-long battle with cancer, surrounded by family.

Janice was born to James and Mary Kay Radich on June 6, 1956 in Watsonville, CA where as a child she participated in 4-H, picked berries in the field (she wouldn't let her kids forget that!), wrapped presents at Ford's Department Store, and was elected Senior Class Treasurer.

She met her husband, Dan, at Santa Clara University, where she graduated with a degree in finance and competed for gold on the Bacardi Babes intermural soccer team. At the University of Illinois – Urbana-Champagne, she earned her master's degree in finance and investments. After beginning her career with Pacific Gas & Electric, for the last 32 years Janice held a number of senior leadership positions with Kaiser Permanente, first as Treasurer and most recently as Vice President of Pensions & Investments. Janice was a student of corporate finance, attaining her CFA and CAIA certificates while working full-time and raising a family. Under her financial leadership she made profound and transformative changes to the betterment of Kaiser employees, members, and communities. Her volunteer interests were widely diverse, including the American Heart Association, California Self-Insurers' Security Fund, the Oakland Diocese, and her children's field trips.

Almost every night you could catch Janice with her nose in a book, magazine or newspaper while enjoying a small bowl of ice cream with lots of nuts. Janice was loving and tough, charming and competitive, with intelligent blue eyes so curious and kind, a quick and ready laugh, always seeking more to learn than to be heard. She will be missed.

Janice is survived by her mother, Mary Kay Radich; husband, Dan Murphy; sons Stephen, Luke, and John Murphy; granddaughters Ellie and Talia Murphy; brothers Jim and Paul Radich and their families; her Croatian cousins; and countless friends and colleagues who will continue to be touched by her positive spirit.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 25 at 10am followed by reception at St. Perpetua's Church, 3454 Hamlin Road, Lafayette, CA. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Melanoma Research Alliance (give.curemelanoma.org/JaniceMurphy), or to one of her favorite charities such as The American Heart Association, Stand! For Families Against Violence, Friends of Alameda Animal Shelter, Moreland Notre Dame School (Watsonville), or to a special hospice.

Dear Luke and Steven, and John and Dan.

I am so sorry for your loss. Your mom was such an amazing mother, community member and finance professional. It was a privilege to know her during the Campo high school years.

Although I only had the opportunity to work with Janice for a short period in 2018, she made a lasting impression on my life. Her smile, curiosity and desire to help others were irresistible. There seemed to be no end to her energy or desire to get things "right". I'm better for having had the chance to know her. My prayers are with her family.

I worked at KP and only briefly crossed paths with Janice in the past few years. I was struck immediately by her warmth and interest, as well as her incredible talent, expertise, and big heart. She had a way to bring everyone together and listen so intently it made me feel like what I had to contribute mattered deeply to her. She was an incredible force for good and role model for me in my professional journey and I´m saddened at this loss for all of us younger professionals that will have a huge hole. My thoughts and prayers are with her family at this time.

I knew Janice as she a client when I worked for AIG. She was the consummate client, always negotiating with style and grace. She worked hard but her first love was her family. She would light up when she talked about her" boys "

Dan: I was so sorry to hear about Janice. I remember her kind smile and beautiful eyes. I think she lived at the Villas Apartments while was there, but my memory may be wrong. Just know I will pray for your boys and you...Janice is already in Heaven

I will miss all of what you were. I hope you are running through the fields of gold - stopping to pet the animals and smell the flowers and maybe taking too long from getting distracted.

We have always looked to Dan and Jan as role models for being enthusiastically kind, generous, and loving in all things - including / especially in the throes of the daily grind at work. The legacy of Janice lives forever in all the people she touched.
