Jean Dean Obituary

Jean Ellen (Hanschen) Dean

May 8, 1942 - April 20, 2018

Beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and friend passed away after a brief battle with cancer, peacefully at home surrounded by family.

She was born May 8, 1942, in San Francisco to Walter and Dorothy Hanschen.

Jean graduated from Capuchino High School in San Bruno and earned a BA degree in Education from San Francisco State University. She worked as a teacher for nearly four decades, first in San Bruno, then teaching overseas in Germany and Okinawa for the Department of Defense, and later teaching adult education in Sacramento.

She enjoyed traveling the world during her 39-years of marriage to her late husband Richmond Dean II.

Jean was an avid gardener and shared her talent for flower arranging with the Environment Committee of Divine Savior Catholic Church, where she was a devoted parishioner from the earliest days of the parish.

She was a loyal fan of the Sacramento Kings for the last 30 years.

She is survived by her daughters Emily (Dan) and Kathy, her sister Nancy Henn (Mike), her brother Peter Hanschen (Brenda), grandson Jacob Dean Quint, and a large extended family of cousins, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Divine Savior Catholic Church in Orangevale on Monday, April 30 at 10AM, followed by a luncheon. Memorial donations in memory of Jean may be made to the Sacramento Children's Home or Divine Savior Catholic Church.

Jean was a close cousin. I can never remember Jean being cross or angry. She always had a smile and enjoyed every aspect in her life. My fondest memory is when Jean and her friend Mary were teaching in Okinawa. Frank and I were living up-country in Northern Thailand. We met in Bangkok and spent Christmas together. Midnight Mass at the Redemptionist Chapel, and Christmas dinner with Frank’s Bangkok boss and their grandson. We then spent several days exploring Bangkok - the markets, many Buddhist Watts, and lots of Thai market shopping. I was 8 1/2 months pregnant but that didn’t slow us down. We had a wonderful time and we couldn’t get over the fact that a family from San Bruno and San Mateo, California, would meet in exotic Bangkok!

Peter and Nancy,
So sorry to hear about Jean. She always wore a smile in school, and at the reunions we attended. Maybe that's because Elm Avenue was such a happy street to grow up on. Stay strong and carry on her smile.
My thoughts are with you,
Sincerely, Susan Askew Worthington

Jean was a very special friend to me. We grew up together on Elm AV. and remained friends for a long time. She was one on my bridesmaids. She was a wonderful person who was loved by all who knew her!

She will be forever in our hearts. Rest in peace, Jean.

Condolences to the family.
