Jean Evans Obituary

Jean Ann Condon Evans 2 October 1922 - 1 August 2011 Born in Virginia, raised in Philadelphia and Stamford, schooled in Pittsburgh, Jean was beautiful, stubborn, and funny. She defied an early death in a TB sanitarium as a young woman to raise two daughters, Patti and Libbie Schock, and nurture a beloved grandson, Patrick. She was a legal secretary in San Francisco from 1960 through her retirement in 1986. In her signature spike heels, she frequently knew more about the law than the young lawyers she called mister. She found the love of her life, Mike Condon, in whose six foot five frame she felt safe until his death in 1989. After remarrying, she traveled the world with Gomer Evans, a high school classmate, and fulfilled her life long dream of traveling through the Panama Canal. "Life is uncertain, eat dessert first." Mom never met an eclair or hot fudge sundae she didn't instantly devour. She had a quick wit and a cutting glance. She wasn't quick to judge, but once the line was crossed--people or politics, she was done. She spoke her mind and wouldn't back down. She loved to shop, with shoes as her most favored purchase--her grandson has inherited that gene. She took great care with her appearance and felt no shame in asking you for your earrings or purse if she fancied them. She was always generous with her money and made sure we had what we needed. She was jealous of our curly hair, never missed a Giants game, and loved all things Snoopy. Who she was made us who we are. We loved her and will miss her dearly. There will not be a formal service. Her ashes will join Mike's in the waters off the Marin Headlands. She did not champion any particular cause but loved flowers and candy. Give some to someone you love. An ice cream social will be held in her honor on her 89th birthday, October 2, 2011.

i will remember jean in her garden, her protective love of her roses and iris, her gloves and her garden hose. Tossing plant matter 'over the fence' and her laughter.

What a loving tribute to a wonderful woman. I only met her once, but I immediately understood how her daughters came to have a true zest for life and amazingly creative personalities. Although she will be missed, the qualities she endowed to her family will live on. My thoughts are with you all.
