Jerrold Applegarth Obituary

John Jerrold Applegarth (Jerry)

John Jerrold Applegarth (Jerry) died peacefully on May 8th, 2017 in Corte Madera, CA. Born in San Francisco on July 9th, 1923 to George and Gwendolyn Applegarth, he attended Lowell High School (1941), the University of California at Berkeley (1945) and Harvard Medical School (1948). While interning at Roosevelt Hospital, New York in 1948, he met Isabel McMillan, a Canadian Surgical Nurse, whom he married and began 60 years of marriage and family of nine children.
He returned to California to serve in the US Army at San Luis Obispo / Camp Roberts as a medical doctor. He started his internal medicine practice in San Francisco at 490 Post overlooking Union Square. He was affiliated with St.Luke's Hospital and Davies Medical Center for many years throughout his long career.
He was enrolled in the Board of Internal Medical Examiners, was a Fellow in the American College of Physicians, and was an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco.
Throughout his nearly 94 years he loved playing the piano and sang confidently during choral mass. As a strong baritone he reveled in a hearty rendition of Happy Birthday when sung with the entire family, "several times annually".
As an avid sportsman he was passionate for his tennis game and played each Wednesday and Saturday with a number of life long friends.
An Eagle Scout, and member of San Francisco Troop 14, he introduced all six of his sons to Scouting with many outdoor trips and adventures.
He appreciated the magnificence of California's natural heritage and instilled a love of the Sierra's back country exploration through annual backpacking trips which also included his sister Adrienne. Not shy of a challenge, it wasn't uncommon to have seven "young explorers" on these annual high country trips which came as an early Christmas gift to our mother as a much-needed break.
He is survived by his nine children, David (Mel), Mary, Katherine, Allison (Ivan Javor), John (Nancy), Alexander (Lane), George (Ken), Gregory (Francesca), Geoffrey and 14 grandchildren William, Gardner, Allison, Alexandra (Andras), Gwendolyn, Georgia, Frances, Wesley, Angus, Ireland, Annabelle, Aidan, Duncan and Alec.
A rosary will be held on Sunday May 14th at 5pm at Halsted N. Gray-Carew and English, 1123 Sutter Street, San Francisco. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday May 15th at 3pm at St. Dominic's Church, 2390 Bush Street, San Francisco.
Private family interment.
The family is grateful to the doctors and caregivers who so generously gave of their time and professional skills during this past difficult year.
Jerry greatly appreciated the communities at Aegis of Corte Madera and St. Dominic's Catholic Church.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the musical programs at St. Dominic's Catholic Church, San Francisco.

Isabelle and Jerry were a great part of my life while living in San Francisco and raising my son, Jeff, in the eighties. I had many dinners at their home with the children, and Isabelle and I shared many luncheon martinis at Liverpool Lils. Those were very special times!

Jerry would have loved the recent solar eclipse. He showed us how to view an eclipse by observing light filtering through leaves of trees creating a beautiful pattern.
I had the pleasure of working with this very caring and knowledgeable physician.

Hello Geoff, Losing a parent is always difficult regardless of age. memories of being raised and cared for by these wonderful people are everlasting. I've always understood that you were fortunate to have "two of the best". Continue the fight and keep dancing. Good to see you at Ann's birthday, always a bright face and big smile. We at Saint Hilary's extend our condolences to Jerry's family and friends, and we will miss him at Sunday Mass here in Tiburon. Even through sad circumstances, it was a privilege to get to know him better, and to enjoy his gentle kindness whenever he was with the community for worship. May the good Lord bless his children, and his children's children!

My heartfelt condolences to the family for their loss. I loved both Isabel and Jerry, and had many years of close friendship with the entire family. Met Isabel at the Convent when I enrolled my son, Jeff, 58 years ago, and our relationship continued with great love and closeness until her death, and now, Jerry's. My prayers are with you. . .Patty Powell
