I met Jerry when we were assigned as roommates at the Middlebury Summer Language School in 1961, he having just graduated from Yale and I from Brown. To attend one must sign the famous "word of honor" only to speak the language being studied on pain of expulsion. Dictionaries always at the ready, we struggled to communicate for about week, when late one we pulled a blanket over our heads and sat in the middle of the floor and got to know each other in whispered English. A memorable feature of that summer was our outings to Lake Dunmore, where Jerry astonished me with his powerful backstroke. That was also the time when the Wall was put up in Berlin, and I remember Jerry's long phone conversations to determine whether the Navy was going to call him to active duty. Well over ten years later when I was a Foreign Service Officer assigned to the Embassy in Chile, I was driving in Providencia when I was suddenly cut off and a very tall blond man jumped out, which scared the bejeezus out of me before he started calling my name and I realized it was Jerry! Though my contacts with Jerry were intermittent, I have always been grateful that we had been selected to share that dorm room at Middlebury.

I met Jerry in September, 1956, on our first day at Yale. After moving to San Francisco in 1971, we saw each other sporadically at the Pacific-Union Club or the Bohemian Club. Having served on 20 non-profit boards, I always Jerry for his efforts in this area and regret we did not serve on a joint board.

In our minds, Jerry will always be with us. He made us all feel like the most special persons in the world.
It is hard to forget someone who gave you so much to remember.

A lovely tribute to an amazing man. I had the good fortune to join Jerry on a couple of his walks during a BAF leadership meeting. He was an interesting conversationalist, offered wise words, and was genuinely caring.
I wish you care and comfort.
