John Bischoff Obituary

John Alvin Bischoff

John Alvin Bischoff, 75, passed away on Sunday, January 10th, 2021 in San Rafael, California. He was born in San Francisco, California on June 30th, 1945 to Elizabeth and Hermann Bischoff. The Bischoff family resided in the Mission District of San Francisco, where John grew up with his brothers (Donald Bischoff and Roy Bischoff) and his sister (Lori Cappelletti). He graduated from Lowell High School, earned a Bachelor's degree at San Jose State University, and a Master's degree from the University of California at Berkeley. John also studied abroad in Germany while visiting family in his younger years. Fluent in German, he genuinely loved picking up the phone to speak to his cousins in Germany during each and every holiday.
In 1968, John moved to Marin County and shortly thereafter met his wife, Katherine Stacy Reese whom he married in 1971. They began their family in Tiburon, first welcoming their son, David Reese Bischoff, in 1982 followed by their daughter, Jillian Reese Bischoff, in 1986. They moved to San Rafael in 1987 where their home was the center of countless parties and celebrations for masses of friends and family who loved being in John's presence. From block parties to Kentucky Derby parties, dinner parties to Superbowl parties, laughter was a constant, as were his hilariously bad jokes, like "That went over like a lead balloon."
An avid sportsman, he frequented golf courses and the bocce courts in San Rafael with his long-time team, the Bocce Gods. He and his wife, Stacy, headed the annual Bocce Ball Fundraiser. He was a member of the Monte Cristo Club of San Francisco and a Dinner Club composed of his closest friends-turned-family, with whom he celebrated for the last 30 years. As a San Francisco native, he held season tickets to the San Francisco 49ers for over three decades at Candlestick Park.
John was recently celebrated for 50 years of employment as a dedicated and talented licensed civil and geotechnical engineer working for Leeds, Hill, and Jewett, Woodward-Clyde, URS, and AECOM. His colleagues considered him a great leader and coach. He was well known for his care, consideration and mentorship of every person he met throughout his career. He shared his knowledge of tunnels, water treatment, wastewater, levees, dams and much more. He was widely respected by his clients and colleagues alike. John loved to share stories from his extensive travel, nationally and internationally, both for business and pleasure.
John was a man of strong faith and was a long-time member of St. Luke's Presbyterian Church where he was an elder and head of the Pastor Nominating Committee. He was also an integral member of the Marin Cursillo Community, where he worked on several Cursillo teams and led multiple Men's Cursillo Weekends. John supported his teammates with his warmth, compassion, humor but most of all his ability to listen. Not only was John an admired leader in the Cursillo Community and St. Luke's Presbyterian Church, he impacted all who had the opportunity to engage with him.
John is survived by his beloved bride of 49 years Stacy, and their children Nira Ray, David Bischoff (Bridget Bischoff), and Jillian Restivo (Brent Restivo) and his grandchildren Lincoln Restivo and Madeline Bischoff, many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends. He was an exceptional husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. To know John was to love him, and boy did we love him.
Donations in his honor can be made to Marin Cursillo online or by mail to: P.O. Box 4101, San Rafael, CA 94913-4101. Please include In Memory of John Bischoff in your donation.
A proper memorial will follow when the Covid crisis allows.
We already miss you…..you will always be our "all-time greatest hero."

I had the pleasure of working with and learning from John on the Manapouri Second Tunnel project in New Zealand between 1997 and 2002. He was always calm and collected when dealing with disputes during construction. On one occasion he flew from the US and arrived on site (after several flights, a 2 hour drive from the airport then a 1 hour boat ride to the site) still in the suit he'd been wearing when he left home with no expectation of travelling to NZ without notice!
All of us who worked with him down-under have the same memory - John was a true gentleman, an excellent engineer and a great friend. We miss him!

I first met John as a consultant 20 years ago and he has been a mentor and friend ever since, even as our paths crossed and diverged over these many years. His warmth and radiant smile always erased the time between our many meetings and shared meals, and his wise counsel stays with me to this day. I’ll miss his reassurance and optimism when things went awry, and his enthusiasm about everything that life sent his way. I will miss John.

John and I, along with the other Practice Leaders, relished the opportunity to develop the Practice within Woodward -Clyde in the early to mid-1990s. Because of John's guidance and support we seriously grew the water resources and geology/geotechnical business and enjoyed every minute of the work. Without John's personality and character, that would not have happened. I still say that John was the "best boss" I ever had in my nearly 50 year career. Even though we have not had a direct working relationship in the past few years, I will thoroughly miss the opportunities to connect with him on random occasions. Let it be known there are not many like John.

My condolences to the Bischoff family on Johns passing. He was a great friend and mentor for over 20 years. John had a knack for calmly resolving issues with clients and colleagues with his smile and warmth. We last met by chance at the escalator of his office building, briefly catching up as so many times before. I will really miss him.

I had the good fortune of knowing and working with John for more than 30 years and was shocked and saddened on hearing of his passing. He was the consummate professional, a true gentleman and dedicated mentor to so many of us at Woodward-Clyde/URS/AECOM. John had the remarkable ability to raise everyone up and make them better. He genuinely cared about people and always had their best interest at heart. John touched many lives and he will be truly missed.

I met John over 30 years ago when I visited friends working in WCC and met him at conferences after that. I did manage to work with him the last 15 years and enjoyed his ideas and his sense of humor. We will miss him.

John was a very dear friend and mentor. He mentored many of us through our years with URS/AECOM. He gave his time and energy without thinking about himself. I will truly miss him.

John was a friend at Lowell. I had the good fortune of seeing him a few times over the past 20 years because he lived around the corner from friends in San Rafael. The one thing that was true at Lowell and as adults is that John was always a real gentleman.

I had known John for over 30 years and have worked closely for the past 10 years. He was the finest person that i ever knew. We had so much fun when we were together and seemed to tease each other into laughing while working.
I will truly miss him and will remember him forever.

John was the consummate professional and a valued colleague for over 20 years. I can’t recall all the many times I would call John for advice and guidance on a whole range of issues. He was always patient, respectful, and one of the best “listeners” I know. He would fly cross country to lend a hand on any technical issue as well as knotty organizational dilemmas. Like everyone, I will miss John immensely.

I worked with John many years at Woodward-Clyde and URS. He was truly brilliant but what I remember most is his infectious smile that seemed to always be there, his warm gentle nature and his great laugh. I feel blessed to have been able to work with him and to know him.

John has had a profound effect on my husband, myself and so many others. We've been blessed to call him a friend and we have many joyful Marin Cursillo memories with him. John made a difference in this world. He made a difference by sharing his sense of humor, his intelligence, his incredible organizational skills and his rock-solid faith. All with a twinkle and a smile. We miss him so much. We continue to send our love and prayers to Stacy and the family.

John was an inspirational man and leader. I've knew John from afar for decades, but had the opportunity almost 10 years ago to get to know him better we we served on the planning committee for the USSD Annual Conference held in San Francisco. Although I never worked in the same company as John, his influence was felt throughout the engineering community. One could sense John's sincere love and respect of God and people far and wide. My sincere condolences to the Bischoff family. He will certainly be missed by many.
- Sincerely, Dan Wade
