John Glanville Obituary

John J. Glanville Professor emeritus, San Francisco State University, died on November 20th at the age of 89. He is survived by his wife Carol, son James, daughters Julia and Sarah, son-in-law Kai Lundgren-Williams, grandson Ilari, and sister-in-law Alice Broquist. A specialist in ancient and medieval philosophy, John taught for 60 years, 41 of them at SFSU. Born in the Buffalo, N.Y. area in 1921, he was a graduate of St. John's College, Minn. He received his Ph.D from Notre Dame and did post-doctoral studies in Toronto and Switzerland. Several generations of students will remember his exacting standards and the care with which he encouraged their work. Many of them went on to become professors themselves. John was an ardent union member and was an active participant in the 1968 strike at SFSU and at St. John's University, N.Y. in 1966. A memorial mass will be held at the old Mission Dolores on Saturday, December 4, 2010 at 11:00am. A reception follows in the church hall.

Dr. Glanville was full of light and delight as he taught Medieval Philosophy. I loved to listen to his lectures, copy his diagrams from the board, and I loved to read his comments on my papers. This was a magical time studying philosophy in the mid 1970's. He made the past come alive. Philosophy was not a game for him, but a window into the good, the beautiful and the true. He was both a scholar and a good person. May his memory be for a blessing.

Dear Carol and Family. I was sadded to learn today of John's passing. He was like an older brother to me from the far off days of his time at Notre Dame and Chicago. Heartfelt sympathy. Tony
