John Horgan Obituary

John P. Horgan Predeceased by his wife, Lucile M. (Pam) Costello Horgan. John was a proud third generation native of his beloved San Francisco, where his father was the chief building inspector responsible for rebuilding The City following the 1906 earthquake. John was a graduate of St. Ignatius High School, USF, USF Law School, Stanford University and attended Harvard. He was a naval commander who served in the Pacific Theatre in WWII, and retired from the Naval Reserve. John was a premier trial lawyer for 50 years and published many Law Review articles, treatise chapters and invited papers. Retired as deputy chief counsel for Caltrans, he truly loved the law and relished each of his more than 100 jury trials. He was a tough, but witty raconteur who enjoyed learning, cruising and sailing. His life membership at The Olympic Club included handball, boxing and swimming. (He enjoyed dual citizenship in the U.S. and Ireland.) As a true, affable, civic-minded San Franciscan and Irishman, he was fond of saying in his impish way that there are only two races: the Irish, and those who WISH they were Irish! His handshake was a grip of steel to the last, which he always said he would try on St. Peter, just before mentioning that he had an appointment with the Big Boss. He is survived by his son, John, III and daughter-in-law, Dorothy of Sacramento; grandchildren, Lt. Kathryn Horgan, USMC and Johnny Horgan, IV; daughter, Joan and her children Jennifer, Debbie, Kitty, Rich, Lauren, Jodi and Stephanie. A family service will be held at Holy Cross on Wed., Sept. 27, 2006. In lieu of flowers, family requests donations to Keep Memory Alive The Lou Ruvo Alzheimer's Institute, 9101 W. Sahara Ave., PMB #105-177, Las Vegas, NV 89117.
