JOHN MALLEY Obituary

John Francis Malley
Oct. 3, 1920 - Aug. 19, 2012
John's life was long and well-lived, and he will be remembered by many for his generosity and compassion. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, John moved to California as a teenager to work on a relative's dairy farm in Modesto. After graduating from Modesto Junior College, John moved to San Francisco, completed his undergraduate and law degrees at the University of San Francisco, and remained in his beloved adopted city for the rest of his life, save a short stint in Staten Island on Coast Guard duty. John served in the Coast Guard for 20 years, retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer, and then spent the bulk of the rest of his career as an Administrative Law Judge for the Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board, retiring as the Presiding Administrative Law Judge in San Francisco.
John was devoted to his family, including his late wife Connie, and his four daughters Maureen, Eileen, Kathy (Skinner), and Annie. He was a gentle and adored "Poppa" to his seven grandchildren: Kate and Sophie Skinner, Michael and Sam Capeloto, Alec Hampton, and Liam and Fiona Willers; and a gracious and supportive father-in-law to his sons-in-law Jeff Capeloto, the late Anthony Hampton, Lemoine Skinner III, and Chris Willers. John was one of nine siblings, and he is survived by sister Margaret Coulter, and brothers Al and Tom Malley.
John had a deep and enduring Catholic faith, and he was a loyal and active parishioner of St. Ignatius Church for many years. He met his wife Connie and made lifelong friends at Old St. Mary's Center, and he and Connie were longstanding members of Christian Family Movement, a Catholic organization committed to reinforcing Christianity and community involvement.
John had an irreverent Irish wit and his laugh was easy to pick out of any social gathering, of which he and Connie hosted many. He made sure that nobody's wine glass was ever empty, and he welcomed scores of golf, work, and other buddies to drop by for dinner on a moment's notice. When not incessantly doing repair projects at his homes and rental properties, John enjoyed world travel with his late wife Connie and playing golf in the fog in the Presidio.
John inspired love and respect from many, and he will be missed. He showed characteristic strength in refusing to bow to the infirmities of age, and fought hard until the end. John's family wishes to express deep gratitude to Dad's kind and loving caregivers at Sutro Heights, UCSF Housecalls, The Institute on Aging, and Hospice by the Bay, and to Dad's many visitors who contributed to the quality of his final years. A Memorial Mass will take place at St. Ignatius Church on September 4, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. The family invites you to consider charitable donations to UCSF Housecalls, located at PO Box 45339, San Francisco, CA 94143-0339, or the charity of your choice.

Maureen, Eileen, Kathy, Annie & Family,
The Hanels will be thinking about you today. My borther Bob saw the biography about John's life in Sunday's Chronicle and read it to my Mom yesterday. It captures what a freindly and delightful man he was. Take care all.

Thank you for your kind words and support. Parking at the memorial service may be a challenge. There is a parking garage at St. Mary's Medical Center and the 4th floor exit will leave you near St. Ignatius.

I was appointed an ALJ and assigned to San Francisco in 1975. John was the boss and what a boss he was. When a particular problem arose with one the cases, you needed only go to John for the answer. He would repair to one of his several filing cabinets and retrieve a document which resolved the difficulity. The amazing thing about this procedure was that none of the files were indexed. He simply knew where all the documents were. That was John. We worked together, played golf together, socialized together and remained good friends over the years. I knew Connie well and was devistated by her loss. John's daughters always made him proud. No doubt John and Connie had agreat deal to do with their successful upbringing. We will all miss John. He truly was one of a kind.
I will be unable to attend the services but my spirit will definitely be there.

John was a co-worker and friend of my Father Daniel Hanley.
My condolences, I too remember him as a very kind man.

John was a kind and considerate mentor to me when I joined the Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board as an ALJ, and we shared friends - Art and Heidi Evans - who were John's admirers. He was a good man, and I am sorry to learn of his passing.
