John Raphael Obituary

John Grierson Raphael (March 20, 1938 - Feb. 6, 2012) Passed away peacefully at his home in Oakland, surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with cancer. John, a third generation Californian, was the youngest son of Dr. James C. Raphael and Melva I. Raphael of Berkeley CA. Preceded in death by his brothers Dr. James C. Raphael Jr. and David H. Raphael. He is survived by his beloved wife Maria T. Raphael, his children Ana Raphael and her husband Terry Scott, son David J. Raphael and Dawn Raphael. John was so proud of his grandchildren, Maria, Sophia and Ben Raphael, John and Elena Scott. In addition, he leaves many nieces, nephews, family and friends. John attended Ojai Valley School and fondly remembered that time in his life. He was a graduate of Berkeley High and the University of San Francisco, class of '64 and a long time employee of Chevron. He was deeply committed to his Catholic faith. He was a member of St. Lawrence O'Toole Parish, ICF Br.91, an Associate of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary and donated countless hours of volunteer work to Casa Francisca. John loved life. Crossword puzzles, cookies, Sudoku and opera. He was a scholar at heart to the end of his life. "Papa John" will be greatly missed by those who knew him and loved him. Viewing and Vigil will be held at St. Lawrence O'Toole Church, 3725 High Street, Oakland CA on Sunday, Feb 12, beginning at 6:00 PM. A funeral mass, also at St. Lawrence O'Toole, will be held on Monday, Feb. 13th at 11:00 AM. The family would like to express their gratitude to the Kaiser Oakland Hospice Staff for their compassionate and loving care. In lieu of flowers the family requests that you make donations to the charity of your heart. HOLY ANGELS COOPER CHAPEL FD-381 (510) 533-4114

Maria, Ana & David, my thoughts are with you in this most difficult time. In the time I knew John best, I remember many evenings of movies and dinner celebrations at home.
He seemed to be in his element out to dinner at his favorite Chinese, Mexican or Italian restaurants, surrounded by family and friends. Long may you run...

To my dear family, specially to my Aunt Tere, Ana, David and Terry, all my love and my prayers. I will always remember him reading, studying, driving me all over the Bay Area, going all the way up to Mount Diablo, enjoying the majesty of the ocean, teaching me the History of the places, joking. Will always remember his kindness, his compassion, his deep, profound faith. His essence is with all of us who love him because he will always live in our memories. All my love.

My prayers, my love, part of my soul, my life and memories are with you all, Tía Tere, Ana, David, Terry, nieces and nephews. Life defies death because people live in our memory until we leave this world, so, he will always be alive because he is in my mind in my heart and in my soul and I know one day we will meet again. I know also that is the way he is going to live within you from now on. To all of you, dearest family, all my love. Astrid Otten Carranza

To my dear aunt Tere, my deepest sympathies. I was too little when my aunt and uncle came to Gutatemala city with the children, i was maybe 7 or 8 years old and of course I couldn't speak any English to play with my cousins... but I remember my dear aunt whom I always keep close to my heart. All my thoughts, love and prayers go out to all in the family.

John was always fun and always interesting. We attended school in Ojai together. I spent hours with him when we visited in later life discussing pre-Columbian South America, one of his specialties, as well as just about everything else under the sun. His interests and enthusiasm were boundless. I will miss him.

John was a classmate of mine at the Ojai Valley School. I remember him then, and at later reunions, as one of the nicest, sweetest guys I've known. Love and condolences to his family.
