John Ruggeiro Obituary

John Ruggeiro
04/24/1930 - 07/25/2024
John was born and raised in San Francisco. He attended Sacred Heart Grammar School and St. Ignatius High School. John started working for the San Francisco Main Library at age 14 and cherished his years there before entering the San Francisco Police Department in 1952. He and his wife, Virginia (Griffin), were high school sweethearts and married that same year.
During his time with the SFPD, John rose through the ranks from Officer to Inspector/Sergeant, assigned to the Burglary detail. He was later promoted to Lieutenant, commanding several assignments throughout the department before retiring in 1982 after 30 years of service. After his retirement, John passed his police star (#1054) to his son John, and when he retired, the star was passed on to his son-in-law Tony, who is currently an SFPD Officer.
John embarked on a second career as Director of Security for Shorenstein and Company and Lili Ann Company, both in San Francisco.
John and Virginia celebrated 60 years of marriage together, moving from San Francisco to Atherton in 1980. They became involved in town committees, meetings, and activities and hosted many social events and family weddings at their home.
After the passing of his wife, Virginia, John married Ginny Maloney and found happiness, enjoying an active life together. He was active in the Veterans Police Officer's Association, a member of the St. Ignatius Alumni Association, and a member of the Italian Men's Social Club of Menlo Park. John loved classic cars and owned several over the years, with his favorites being a 1937 Cord and a 1955 Thunderbird.
John is survived by his children, Paul (Elena) Ruggeiro, Nancy (George) Daum, and John (Diane) Ruggeiro, his grandchildren, Justin (Hannah) Ruggeiro, Tina (Tony) Suhrke, Jeannine (Chris) Fuller, and Kelsey, Courtney and Maddy Daum; four great grandchildren Sadie and Nate Suhrke, Ella and Maverick Fuller; his sister Jeanne Llama and his wife Ginny (son Roy). He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia, and his grandson, Josh.
A celebration of John's life will take place on Wednesday, August 21st, at 11:00 am, at the Church of the Nativity, located at 210 Oak Grove in Menlo Park, CA. A reception will follow.

As a friend of Nancy's, I will forever remember his invitation for all her girlfriends to his raucous retirement party in the early 80s, where we were the only women. It was a great time. Since we met John, he often forgot our individual names and collectively called us all "dear" every time we saw him.

John was dear to all of us and we will remember him fondly!

John was a great and good man. I never worked with him on the PD but he was a member of the Veteran POA Board of Directors and a pleasure to work with there. I will miss his frequent phone calls asking, "hey Larry, what about this...and what about that?" He was a kick! The good always die young. Hey, he was 94 years young...wasn't he? God Speed John.
