John Salzer Obituary

Dr. John M. Salzer

April 6, 1934 - February 21, 2015

Dr. John M. Salzer died of an intestinal infection Saturday at Sequoia Hospital. A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, he graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1956 and Harvard Medical School in 1960.

After residency at the Boston City Hospital, he served in the U.S. Air Force in Tripoli, Libya and then settled on the Peninsula where he raised his family and lived for the past 5 decades. He practiced medicine in Redwood City until his retirement in 1999, dedicating himself to the care of thousands of local residents regardless of their ability to pay. One patient gave him eggs, another a hand rendered drawing, in appreciation of his services.

He was a renaissance man, a lover of learning, the natural world, self-improvement, poetry, philosophy, history and literature, and enjoyed hiking on many Bay Area trails and throughout California.

He is survived by his long time partner Patricia Hartnett of Redwood Shores, his brothers Richard and Tom, his sons Terry, Dave and Larry, his step-daughters Alisa Schroter and Joanne Paul, and eight grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to your favorite library in memory of John Salzer.

Dr. Salzer was a true family doctor who would make house calls when needed. He helped my parents, my siblings and me not only with health care but also with kindness and compassion. He was a good soul and I wish him peace.

John Salzer was an excellent and compassionate physician, a gifted writer, an avid hiker and lover of nature, a bibliophile, a great philosopher, and a remarkable human being. He will be greatly missed
