John Steinhelber Obituary

John Steinhelber, Ph.D.
11/29/1936 - 04/25/2025
John Steinhelber grew up in St. Louis Park, MN, with his parents Donald Steinhelber and Jean (Webb) Steinhelber, his older sister Jo Anne, and his younger brother Tim. He earned his bachelor's degree from Hamline University, his doctorate in psychology from the University of Minnesota, and was certified as a Jungian Analyst by the C. G. Jung Institute of San Francisco. He was the Director of UCSF's Clinical Psychology Training Program and chaired various Ethics and Training Committees at the Jung Institute.
From his youth onward, John dedicated himself to peace and the compassionate search for deeper Truth in himself and in others. He was a conscientious objector aligned with the non-violence philosophy of Gandhi and was more interested in reaching a true and just resolution to conflicts than in proving his own perspective was right. He loved the profound relationship and exploration possible in Jungian Analysis. Even after he retired from clinical-analytic practice at age 80, he continued to enjoy consulting work. Those who knew John in personal, professional, or even casual relationships were struck by his depth of feeling, the wisdom of his comments, and the sense of John as a profoundly spiritual man who inspired trust.
John is survived by his long-time companion and wife, Jane Zich, his sister, Jo Anne del Razo, his brother, Timothy Steinhelber, cousin, Sue Lender, sisters-in-law, Marianne McCarthy and Margaret Precup, brothers-in-law, Mike Zich, Wally Zich, John Zich, and Pete Zich, and by numerous nephews and nieces and other extended family members, as well as colleagues and friends, who had the very good fortune of knowing John.

I can remember so many Thanksgiving and Christmas meals at the Steinhelber family table. There was always room for one more, and Jean and Don treated me like family from Day One. John and Tim were there to share, and that was fun too. Sue has been the go-between, keeping me posted on the family happenings. John will be much missed. May the family have a warm and caring holiday season.
