John Urquhart Obituary

URQUHART, John Duncan "Jack" November 2, 1931 - December 4, 2013 Jack Urquhart, alias "Chicken Jack" has flown the coop one last time, passing away on December 4, 2013 at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. Jack will be remembered for his humourous, politically incorrect signage outside his namesake restaurant "Chicken Jack's" (Formerly Dixie Lee) in Nanaimo. As a people person, he thrived in the restaurant business for almost 20 years, crowing like a rooster (his trademark) when he received an award for his valuable contribution to the BCRFA. He finally retired at age 67, in 1998. Survived by wife Gwen, daughters Sharon (Graeme), Wendy, and four grandchildren Wendy, Kylie, Devon, and Sarah by whom he shall be missed by but never forgotten. Birds of a feather will be flocking together in celebration of Jack's life from 1-4 pm on January 4th, 2014 in Vancouver, BC. For further details please contact the family at [email protected] or Sands Funeral Chapel at 250-753-2032. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of your choice would be appreciated. "May you Roost in Peace, Chicken Jack!" Sands - Nanaimo

We will miss you, Gramps. My first memories of you are from Christmas. Granny would always use ridiculously powerful Scotch tape on our presents, but you always had the box cutter to open them up. Gramps, the Presents Liberator!

Definitely a piece of Nanaimo history, an icon! Going to Chicken Jack's was always a family treat when I was a youngster. Condolences to his family.
