Jomar Lococo Obituary

Jomar Katherine Lococo Nov. 8, 1948 - Dec. 18, 2011 Jomar Katherine Lococo, 63, of Petaluma, passed away as a result of a car accident on Sunday, December 18. She leaves behind her loving and devoted husband of 22 years, Randall C. Fowler. Jomar was the daughter of the late Salvatore & Katherine Lococo. Born in San Francisco and raised in Corte Madera, Jomar attended Marin Catholic High School, Dominican University, Portland State University and the University of Oregon at Eugene. Jomar was well-known and esteemed in her professional field. She worked as a speech and language therapist for over thirty years, including twenty-five with the San Rafael City Schools from which she retired in 2007. She also served in the West Marin School District. In recent years, she had continued in private practice while also mentoring student speech/language therapists at Santa Rosa Junior College. Many benefited from her expertise. She was often called upon to deliver presentations across the nation on specific topics such as supporting second language learners and their needs. In 2010, Jomar was inducted as a fellow into the American Speech and Hearing Association. Jomar was full of life and love for those around her. She always rose to meet whatever life presented with determination and optimism. She was proud of her Italian heritage. Family was important to her so she frequently organized gatherings, including rafting and ski trips with her nieces and nephews, family reunions, treks to San Francisco Giants games and so on. Together, Jomar and Randy were world travelers, often exploring unique and little-known corners of the world. Her heart went out to those in need both abroad and at home. She and Randy sponsored Wivine, a young girl from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Jomar also chose to continue the work of her parents by supporting the Presentation Sisters in their mission to build a clinic in Santa Clara, Guatemala. Jomar enjoyed membership in the Petaluma Women's Club, the Sixth Street Book Club, and the Madonna de Lume Society of Petaluma. Gardening was a passionate hobby. Jomar had a warm heart and a strong, caring personality. She will be deeply missed by family, countless friends, colleagues, and acquaintances. She is also survived by her siblings Janice Holland (Michael), Larry Lococo (Kathy), Judy Lococo (Tony Gambardella), Anne Martin (Gregory). She treasured her nieces, nephews, and grand-nephew: Marisa (Patrick) Kelley and baby Finn; Torin Holland; Lauren & Siena Lococo; Anthony & Dante Gambardella; Marco & Vincent Martin. A Celebration of Life will be held in Jomar's memory at a later date. In lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be forwarded in her memory to: The Presentation Sisters, (indicate Memorial for Jomar Lococo), 1500 North Second Street, Aberdeen, SD 57401; or to Food for the Hungry, (indicate for The Thomas Kelley Project in Congo), 1224 East Washington St., Phoenix, AZ 85034.

Dear Lococo and Fowler family members: Please accept my condolences for the loss of Jomar. News of her death was devastating on both a personal and professional level.
I had the good fortune to be introduced to Jomar about 15 years ago. Our county was looking for an 'expert' in special needs assessment of bi-lingual and bi-cultural students and her name came up as a local resource. With fingers crossed, I asked her to present trainings in this subject area for Sonoma County SELPA special education specialists. No surprise- she was well received and I was asked to bring her back as often as I could by attendees to her trainings throughout Northern California and especially here in Sonoma County. As the years progressed, so did my respect, appreciation and fondness for this mighty woman. I always knew who it was when I heard the words "Hello, my dear" on the phone. I will miss her presence in my life.
Randy, my thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. I wish you a speedy and full recovery.
