I am very saddened to learn of the passing of my great mentor and dear friend, Dr. Jorge A. Alvarado. In 2009, Dr. Alvarado welcomed me as a postdoctoral scholar into his Glaucoma Research Laboratory at the University of California San Francisco during a low point in my life and helped me subsequently become an ophthalmologist. I was always impressed by the very high caliber of his intelligence and by his scientific curiosity. Dr. Alvarado was one the prominent physician scientists in the field of glaucoma. I wish I had the chance, at least one more time, to share a nice meal, along with a fine wine, and an intelligent conversation with him.

Dr. Alvarado was a great man and a great mentor. Without his help and guidance, I never would have chosen my career in ophthalmology. He will be sorely missed by his students, colleagues and patients alike.

Jorge was my doctor. We both have quirky senses of humor and he was delightful.....I brought him pickles after he heard that Rich Abbott got pickles and shows a little hint of "hurt".
I thank him for my Ahmed's. His compassion, and his humor for the several years he was my doctor before he retired.
Now you are a part of the Universe.
But always in our memories, with love and joy.
Thanks Jorge!
My sincere condolences to the family!

Jorge would always laugh hysterically in telling jokes so much that he would blow the punchline. Had so much fun living next door on 7 th Avenue

My deepest condolences to the family and friends during this difficult time. There are no words that can describe the pain of losing someone so beloved. May you find comfort and peace in knowing that your loved one is in God's memory because those who pass on "are precious in his eyes." Psalms 116:15; 1 John 4:9.

I am heartbroken to learn that my husband David's closest friend and colleague has died. Jorge was such a warm, funny, brilliant man. I have many happy memories of traveling with he and Jeannie to eye meetings all around the world - sightseeing together with gourmet meals and much laughter and good conversation. And always, no matter where in the world we were, David and Jorge would be talking glaucoma. I hope they now are together again to continue their endless discussions.
My love and condolences to Jeannie, their daughters and family.
May his name be for a blessing.

No boyfriend has been made to feel more welcome by a potential father-in-law than I was by Jorge. Visiting Jorge and Jean with Julie changed the way I thought about parents. They werent a thing you had to do before you saw your girlfriend. They were a grand part of the experience. This world is a better place for having had Jorge Alvarado around.
