Joseph Byrne Obituary

Joseph William Byrne
October 16, 1938 ~ August 26, 2021
Joseph William Byrne, 82, passed away Aug 26, 2021, after suffering a pulmonary embolism and massive stroke. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife Mary Lynch, his daughters Marianne "Mimi" Richardson, and Erin Byrne, grandchildren Clint and Colton Richardson, his man's best friend Alfie, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is predeceased by his parents Joseph and Anne Byrne, siblings Maureen Plume and Colleen Garvey, and nephews Tom Plume, Gary Plume, and Jay Garvey. Joe was a native of SF and grew up in Noe Valley. He maintained a multitude of lasting friendships formed in childhood and adulthood. After graduating John O'Connell Technical High School he became a member of the Sheet Metal Workers' Union and went on to own and operate his own shop. He had a rewarding career as a mechanical contractor until his retirement, when he developed his fishing and camping hobbies. He was a loving father and grandfather. He raised his daughters in San Francisco and Sonoma and made sure they were educated, taught to be kind, and that they and his grandsons saw Ireland. Joe was known for his kindness, generosity, compassion for those in need, and concern for his friends and family. With his wife Mary he took care of his mother until her death. He was a friend to many who needed a home and a job, and he inspired and mentored many apprentices in his trade. He had a sharp sense of humor, loved to BS, argue politics, and watch old movies. Together with Mary they hosted many pool parties where Joe is remembered for his skills on the barbecue and never letting anyone go home hungry. He had a passion for Ireland and visited many times and came to know his extended family. He learned Ireland's history and its politics and became a citizen. He was committed to his faith and in 2006, together with Mary and his cousin Father Jack O'Neil, enjoyed a trip of a lifetime when they visited Rome, IT and participated in University of Dallas' adult program where they studied the roots of their Catholic faith and culture. He was an avid participant and so well-prepared for class that his professor asked him where he had earned his degree. We are deeply saddened by his passing and will always remember his unique character, generosity, and genuine love he felt for all of us.
Friends are invited to visit from 3:30pm to 5:30 pm with a rosary at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 8, 2021 at St. Francis Solano Church in Sonoma. A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, September 9, 2021 at 11:00am at St Leos Church also in Sonoma. Private Inurnment at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Colma to be held at a later date. We have great memories of Joe, his generosity and his stories. His visits to Ireland were always looked forward to and he tried to see as many of his cousins as he could.
We still talk about our trip to California and the great time Joe and Mary gave us. Camping out in Yosemite was a highlight.
Mary you are in our thoughts and prayers at this time.

Joe Byrne was a kind and generous man! He took care of so many people, especially the Irish from San Francisco. A true native San Franciscan, he loved the City! Always working, always smiling and yes, always making sure the job was getting done right! We will miss you, may God Bless you and your family!
