Much loved Joseph "Joe" Francis McCarthy passed away on June 5, 2018 in Napa, California at the age of 83 with his family by his side. Joe was born on October 4, 1934 in San Francisco; son to the late Claire (Clancy) and Joseph Raphael McCarthy. After graduating from Sacred Heart High School, Joe joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Vicenza, Italy, where he discovered his love of travel, culture, and adventure and reveled in his weekend trips to Harry's Bar in Venice. Joe graduated from City College of San Francisco and joined the San Francisco Police Department prior to finding his true calling, the San Francisco Fire Department. He retired as a Battalion Chief in 1993, yet stayed busy working at Maybelline, umpiring softball games, attending Cal football games, and enjoying time with his close-knit family. To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.

My most sincere sympathy to you, and your family for your loss of Joe.
I met Joe in 1976 at Station 4. He was a fine gentleman. He was most sincere, and one of the funniest guys I had ever met.
One time I had some notoriety about giving mouth to mouth to a cat. Later, Joe had come over to my house and had a Truck company ladder my roof, and put a stuffed toy cat on my roof.
Joe always had a smile, and could have you in stitches laughing. We'll all miss Joe, and especially his humor.
RIP my friend.

We will miss you Joe. You had the greatest combination of compassion and humor. There was not one stuffed shirt in your wardrobe. Condolences to the family.

So sorry to hear about Joe. I worked with Joe at different stages of his FD career. Joe was a lot of fun, kept you in stitches and also on your toes.

To all of Joe's Family,
I am very sad to hear about Joe's passing.
I was always glad to see Joe and work with him in the Fire Department.
And I know he was glad to see me too. My mother was a McCarthy and I always thought I saw a link in him? You know what they say about a connection in life.. George, We never forget our older brothers. May God bless you always..
