Joyce McHugh Obituary

Joyce V. McHugh

July 31, 1927 - Jan. 11, 2019

Joyce Veit McHugh passed away peacefully on Friday, January 11th, 2019 at home after a short illness, with her family at her side.
A native San Franciscan, Joyce attended St. Vincent's High School (now Sacred Heart Cathedral), class of 1945. After graduation, she went to Munson's Business School, then worked at Standard Oil in the stenographic pool.
In 1953, Joyce married the love of her life, James McHugh (deceased). They started their married life in an apartment on Geary Street in San Francisco. Joyce and Jim later moved to Westlake and were parishioners at Our Lady of Mercy. In 1964, they moved to Holy Name Parish in the Sunset District, where they lived for 42 years. Joyce was very involved in the Parish Council, Mothers' Guild, and loved working on the parish festivals - especially the raffles! She had many fond memories as Cub Scout Den Mother, Girl Scout Leader, and her involvement with the St. Vincent DePaul Society. Joyce treasured her friendships from her many years in the Holy Name Sewing Club.
Joyce retired from American Savings in 1986. Her retirement included traveling with Jim on many trips in the U.S., Ireland, and several cruises with friends from Holy Name Parish. Joyce and Jim also enjoyed many years of golf with friends. Joyce and Jim were a constant support to their children and grandchildren and enjoyed attending their grandchildren's sporting events, theater productions, and Grandparents' Days.
Jim and Joyce left SF in 2006 and were warmly welcomed at Our Lady of Angels Parish, Burlingame, where she also volunteered. Joyce served on the St Vincent's/Sacred Heart/SHC Alumni Board for many years and was the recipient of the Lasallian Vincentian Alumni Award in 2008.
We are so grateful for the loving care Joyce's received from her IOA caregivers: Emelie, J.R., Karina, Stephanie, Ana, and Macrina. "147"
Joyce was very outgoing and an inspiration to all of us. She will always be remembered for her warm smile and wonderful sense of humor. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy.
Joyce was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Jim McHugh; her parents, Christian (Fred) and Mary Veit; brother, Raymond Veit, her mother in law, Mary McHugh, father in law, Leo McHugh, and brothers-in-law, Bill McHugh and Ed Bispo, as well as several other family members close to her heart. She is survived by her children, Tim McHugh (Cheryl), Helen Gmazel, Monica Holland (Dan), grandchildren, Maddy McHugh, Steven and Willem Gmazel, Patrick (Bethany), Audrey, Maggie, and Danny Holland; sister, Olga Veit; sister-in-law, Virginia Bispo as well as nieces, and cousins.
Rosary will be held at Duggans Serra Mortuary, 500 Westlake Ave. in Daly City on Thursday, January 17th at 7pm, with Visitation from 5-7pm. Funeral Mass will be at Our Lady of Angels Church in Burlingame on Friday, January 18th at 1pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory or St. Vincent dePaul Society.

Dear Cousins,

I am very sorry for your mothers passing. She had other titles beside Mother, favorite Auntie Joyce, favorite daughter-in-law who took Grandma to all her appointments, favorite sister-in-law to Bill, Virginia and Ed.

She was a kind, funny lady who took care of everyone else. She was happiest when the whole family was together. I think her greatest legacy will be the wonderful children she raised, how proud she was of you and how well you took care of her. She kept up with her extended family of grandchildren, nieces, grandnieces and nephews and displayed her amazing talent to remember all our ages and birthdates. It demonstrated how we each mattered for her to remember the dates.

I have fond memories as a kid. She would load all of us into the car for an outing (movies were our favorite and seatbelts were not yet invented). While her arms were always ready to offer a hug, her arm was also a seatbelt offering protection. I have a favorite teacup she bought me when I became engaged, so I would remember my engagement date. I think of her every time I use it for a cup of tea. She will be dearly missed.

With love and prayers,
Cathy, David, John, Katie, Elizabeth and Joey

It was so nice to have met Mrs McHugh at some of the Holland-Shea gatherings. I can remember Mother's Day sometime in the 80s probably after Monica and Dan were married. We had brunch at the Villa Hotel in San Mateo, that still has a coffee shop in front, but the hotel is now a retirement place. May the McHugh family, all the children and grandchildren find the days ahead be warm and full of smiles for Joyce.

She was the first person we met when we moved to Holy Name Parish in 1968. She had and always had a friendly smile. Jim and Judy Kenney
