Julia Brigden Obituary

Julia Ann Dreyer Brigden
12/29/1948 - 10/26/2024
Julia Brigden passed away on October 26, in her home, surrounded by loved ones, after a long battle with cancer. Affectionately known as, "Girl," Julia was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. She moved to the United States at a young age, where she grew up in Sausalito, Calif. Julia's adventurous spirit was evident from her teenage years, when she made friends with musicians and artists and ran away briefly to Mexico, seeking excitement and new experiences, as she chronicled in her 2019 self-published memoir, "Girl: An Untethered Life."
Julia was married to Mick Brigden from 1987 until his death in 2021. She was previously married to David Freiberg, an original member of Quicksilver Messenger Service, from 1965 to 1979. She was a loving mother to her two children, Jessica Merz and Jack Brigden; and a doting grandmother to her grandson, David Merz.
As a muse to several musicians in the 1960s and 1970s, she was the subject of a handful of songs, including "Quicksilver Girl" by the Steve Miller Band, "Light Your Windows" by Quicksilver Messenger Service, "The Girl With No Name" by The Byrds, and "Jane" by Jefferson Starship.
Julia was known for her intelligence, beauty, athletic competitiveness, free spirit, and love of chocolate. Her independent and loving nature will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She was a lifelong, avid international traveler, often choosing destinations off the beaten path. As a master organic gardener, she cultivated beauty and life wherever she went. Although she never had pets as a child due to her mother's severe allergies, as an adult she loved having cats, dogs, and chickens. A true lover of life, Julia was loath to harm insects, rodents, or snakes. She was a warm and caring sister and served as the Dreyer-Brigden family's lynchpin after her mother, Silvia Cowell Dreyer's, passing in 1995. She had a flair for language, spoke French and Spanish, and was always ready with a witty aside or hilarious remark. Her kindness and humor stayed with her throughout her illness.
"As for my childhood dreams, they didn't play out exactly as I had imagined, but they are close enough. Together Mick and I have explored the jungles of the Amazon and Papua New Guinea. We've camped in tents under African skies, traveled six of the seven continents, and slept on silken sheets. I had imagined these things, and Mick helped make them happen.
I have led a charmed life, perfectly suited to my nature. I fear the next time around, if there is a next time, to pay penance I will return as a street sweeper in Calcutta." - Excerpt from Girl: An Untethered Life
Julia is survived by her children; grandson; and brothers, Christian, Geoffrey and Thomas; as well as numerous loving nieces and nephews. Julia was predeceased by her husband, Mick Brigden; parents, John St. Ormond Dreyer and Silvia Ann Cowell; and brothers, Neil Malloch and Jonathan Dreyer.
A private memorial service is being planned. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Humane Society of Sonoma County in her honor.

I am so sorry to hear of the loss of "Girl" as she was known when I met her in the summer of `76; I cleared brush behind her house..she walked out on the deck, I looked up, she said "hi..my name is Girl..want a beer ?"..Rest In Peace, `Girl´

When I was sixteen, hanging out in Pepe's Pizza Parlor on Telegraph Avenue in Berkely, around 1964, a lovely blond girl my age appeared and I was immediately smitten with her. I spent numerous times hitchhiking to Sausalito to see her, to hang out with her and her friends and have come to see her as my last platonic girl friend. I especially recall a picnic at Muir Beach where she reminded me I had been wandering in tide playing the autoharp.
Next I ran into her at the Monterey Pop Festival where she was visibly pregnant. Can't say I didn't have pangs of jealousy but she was so above such consideration and I knew it, she was better than just an attraction for a teenager and I knew that at the time too. She had a spirit like no one else!
Years passed, life went on and I found myself reading Joel Selvin's book about The Summer of Love, in which he cites her as a source. I contacted Joel who confused me with another boy who was my neighbor, where he came to play while we were both at the same elementary school. He put me in touch with Girl who reminded me of some of the happier times in the sixties.
More time passed, lots of life with lots of ups and downs and a few years ago I was wandering around on dating sites feeling cynical about the options there and suddenly here is Julia Brigdon! I got in touch, she invited me over, we got a sandwich together, she told me she was ill and that her husband had just died in a really tragic manner. Seeing her again was so wonderful! I hoped to see her again and we had a few more email exchanges and then nothing. I have only just now read what I guessed from her silence, that she had passed on. Some where amongst all my ephemera and the trivia I have saved are pictures I took of her on that second meeting back in the nineties. Like everyone else who comments on her, she made a special impression in my world. I am sad she's left us, but the impression she made on me was indelibly wonderful.

Dearest friend, now I understand what a loved one "living on in my heart" means. We shared so much together since we were children and I'm glad we were able to speak often these past three years or so. I'll miss you forever and of course send my love & hugs to Jessica, Polly, Jack, David and Freiberg & Linda always.

I´m I met Julia in high school and on the waterfront in Sausalito where the music science was beginning a renaissance of the San Francisco sound, and she was truly "instrumental" in bringing many musicians together from around the world. I had the pleasure to hang out with her and Grace when she was back in the Bay Area. And I recently discovered her fantastic book Girl, which brought back so many memories and filled in a lot of stories of her travels. We shared the same birthday and it was cool that she was born on the other side of the world. I was hoping to see her again in this lifetime, so now I have great memories and appreciation of her "untethered life". RIP Girl!

Julia will always have a place in our hearts. We will miss her. So many joyful memories. We met as neighbors in Kauai, where we found out we were neighbors in Fairfax. A small world brought us together 34 years ago and we are so grateful for this chance meeting. Rest in aloha Julia.

Oh, Julia. The world became just that bit darker and less luminous when you went out of it. Fly free, Girl from Mill Valley.

Although I did not know Julia I came across her obituary accidentally and truly felt the need to respond to such an amazing tribute to an amazing woman who lived a life so full of adventure and love. I think we all strive to live or have lived a life as well as Julia lived hers. Tomorrow I'm definitely going to buy her book. She sounded so wonderful. Bravo Julia for a life well lived.
