Kiyoshi Naito passed away on May 31, 2023. Kiyoshi was born in 1934 in Sacramento, California to Rev. and Mrs. Shozen Naito. Kiyoshi spent most of his childhood in Kumagawa, Japan and later in Alameda, California. He was a graduate of Lowell High School, San Francisco and the University of California, Berkeley, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Art degree in Economics. After graduating college, he was drafted into the US Army and worked in the finance office at US Army Fort Ord, California.
Professionally, he spent his entire career as a federal employee working in the Department of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF). Kiyoshi volunteered much of his time with the Buddhist Temple of Alameda, Buddhist Churches of America and the Hokka Nichi Bei Kai (Japanese American Association of Northern. California).
After retiring, Kiyoshi also volunteered as Chairman and President of the local Japanese newspaper the Hokubei Mainichi Newspaper Company. Kiyoshi's passions included, traveling, bird watching, listening to classical music, going to museums around the world and eating good food and drink.
He is survived by his wife, Tazuko Janice Naito; daughter Jane Naito; sister Yasuko Fukuda, preceded in death by his sisters Sakiye Kusama and Shigeno Takahashi. A funeral service will be held at the Buddhist Church of San Francisco on Saturday, June 17, 2023 at 4:00 PM. Mr. Naito used to be my supervisor. I remember him as a very professional, kind person. One thing that sticks with me is he never tolerated a messy desk. Rest in peace.
