Kurt Kumli Obituary

Kurt Kumli

Passed away peacefully on August 4, 2014 after a courageous battle with brain cancer. He was 52 years old. Kurt was born on September 14, 1961 in Longview, Washington.
Kurt attended Pleasant Valley High School (1979) in Chico, California, received a Bachelor's of Arts Degree from the University of California in Berkeley (1984) and a Juris Doctorate Degree from McGeorge School of Law (1987). While in law school, he met his future wife, Sue Gillett, and they were married in 1995. They have two daughters, Michaella (14) and Erika (7), who were Kurt's greatest treasures. Kurt was a devoted Dad who shared his love of music, white water rafting, soccer, the San Francisco Giants, and the San Jose Sharks with his daughters. Kurt planned amazing vacations for his family that always combined exploration, new experiences, fun and extraordinary family memories.
Kurt was a Superior Court Judge in Santa Clara County, California. He had several assignments while on the bench including Supervising the Domestic Violence and Appellate Divisions and most recently he was the Supervising Judge for the North County Courts in Palo Alto. While in Palo Alto, Kurt helped create the Palo Alto Review (PAR) Calendar, a calendar designed to provide early diagnosis, resources, and services for low-level offenders with both substance abuse and mental health problems. Over his career Kurt served as a Commissioner on the California State Commission on Juvenile Justice, Juvenile Law Chair for the Task Force for Criminal Justice Collaboration on Mental Health Issues, and he was a long time member of the California Judicial Council's Family and Juvenile Law Advisory Committee.
Judge Kumli was a nationally recognized expert on Juvenile Law and Policy, serving on the faculties of the University of San Francisco School of Law, Santa Clara University School of Law, the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, the Center for Judicial Education and Research, and the California Judges Association. He is the co-author of the nationally recognized Juvenile Law treatise "Sieser & Kumli on California Juvenile Courts" published by LexisNexis.
Prior to becoming a Judge, he spent nearly twenty years as a prosecutor, working as a District Attorney, Supervising Deputy District Attorney, and Chief Deputy District Attorney in San Jose, California. While working as a prosecutor, he received a John B. Pickett Fellowship to attend Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. His work has been featured nationally on "Nightline", "Good Morning America", "Frontline"', "MSNBC", and National Public Radio.
On a local level, Kurt created the non-profit "Neighborhood Youth Pride Coalition" which rewarded pro-social community involvement by local youth. Pulitzer Prize winning author John Hubner documented his involvement with at-risk youth in the community as well as in the courtroom in the book "Somebody Else's Children".
In addition to his wife and daughters, Kurt is survived by his father, Karl Kumli, his step-mother, Lynn Kumli, and his brother, Karl Kumli III. Kurt's mother, Lee Kumli, predeceased him. He is also survived by his father-in-law, Byron Gillett, and his brothers and sisters in-law, Gail and Ralph Heninger, Paul and Cheryl Gillett, along with nieces and nephews, Karl and Anneka Kumli, Jacob and Emily Heninger, and Alex and Jack Gillett. We all miss him.
Our family wants to thank our wonderful friends for the love and support shown to us. We are forever touched by your kindness.
Family and friends are invited to attend the Vigil Service Friday 7:00pm and the Funeral Mass Saturday 12:00 Noon ALL at St. Brendan's Church, Ulloa St. and Rockaway Ave., San Francisco. Committal Private. Donations in Kurt's memory may be made to his daughters education trust fund.

Just reflecting on you - how thankful I am that you saw something in me and encouraged me to pursue this track in prosecution. I had a vision, but you helped pave the way. I would not be who or where I am at today without you. It still pains me that I lost the benefit of your mentor/friendship that I was so looking forward to gaining over the years to come. But alas, that wasn´t meant to be. Know though, that you made a tremendous impact on my life and that of many others. You continue to be sorely missed, while I find peace knowing you are at peace. Rest well Professor Kumli. I will do my best to honor your legacy through my work and deeds.

I just found out that Kurt had passed. My deepest sympathies to his entire family and closest friends. As a criminal defense attorney, I appeared numerous times before Kurt when he was on the bench. Being a judge truly suited him. He understood people, was easy to speak with, and most of all JUST. AND A GOOD MAN.

Far too young to leave those he loved.

My sincere condolences for Kurt's family. I was out of town and very sad to have missed the services. Kurt was a wonderful friend, mentor, and colleague. I had the pleasure of working with him both in the juvenile justice system in the DA's office and as a colleague as a judge. He was an amazing supervisor, a tireless advocate for youth everywhere, and just a good man. I hope his daughters will find some peace in knowing that he has taught them well and given them the tools they need to succeed. I know he loved his family from the bottom of his hear. He will be greatly missed.

Kurt cared profoundly about justice, young people, and making the world better. He was also brave, unheistantly willing to open up his world to a group of reporters from ABC/PBS. He believed in letting the truth win out. Kurt also wore the love he had for his daughters on his sleeve at all time. Their accomplishments and personalities filled him with such joy, laughter and pride. And in Sue he found a true partner with tremondous grace, who gave him a safe place to come back to from the complex world he dealt with everyday as a prosecutor and judge. My heart goes out to Sue, his beloved daughters, his family, friends, and colleagues.

I was saddened to hear of Kurt's passing. I went to Bidwell Jr. with Karl and only knew of Kurt as the "pesky younger brother". I live in Santa Clara now and often read about Kurt's achievements in the SJ Mercury news. I'm very Chico-proud of Kurt and wish Karl and the Kumli family condolences in their time of grief. Kurt was obviously very intelligent and committed to represent those who often had no voice. His passing is a loss to the entire community he served with such commitment.

I will always remember Kurt's kind offering of his valuable time and input when I was working with the SJ mayor's office to create San Jose's gang intervention program. Kurt was a deputy Da at the time. He was a Godsend in sharing with me a wealth of information associated with behaviors of youth caught up in the juvenile justice system...essentially contributing in important ways to our program. He cared so much about helping others. May all of Kurt's loved ones be comforted in their great loss. He was greatly appreciated by so many as a one-of-a-kind special human being.

I was so saddened to hear the news of Kurt's passing. I considered him to be a very wise and intelligent person, who was full of knowledge of the legal system. I remember working closely with him during the beginnings of the Juvenile Domestic Violence Unit at the Probation Dept., and he always showed compassion for all victims. When he became a Judge, I truly thought it was well-deserved. A big hole will be left in the legal world, especially in Santa Clara Co. My condolences to the family and my prayers for his daughters. Don't worry girls; your dad will always be there with you. May his soul rest in eternal peace in the company of God, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

I am grateful to my friend Kurt for a quarter century of collegiality, mutual encouragement, and moral support. His great sensitivity to the daily ironies of our work was never tainted by the cynicism so common to our chosen profession. Rather, he always strove to bring out the best in others and to protect them from their all-too-human failings. The example he set will be sorely missed in the justice community.

Kurt was supportive and generous to his support staff in Juvenile Wards unit at the DA's. I remember when the County DA at the time told our unit to keep the parties to a low profile because the party decorations were put up so often. Thanks for giving us the best times at work. We will miss you.
