J. Lawrence "Larry" Pozzi, 76, of Oakland passed away April 6. He had a lifetime career in television where he was recognized for his technical expertise and innovations. His career spanned black and white TV to high-definition TV. Starting in Stockton at KOVR 13, he was involved with the station's conversion of black and white TV to color. In the Bay Area, as the Engineering Manager for KBHK 44 and Chief Engineer/Director of Engineering for KRON 4, he was responsible for all phases of station engineering and technical management. He led and designed station automation systems, control room facilities, electronic newsgathering, digital video systems, satellite communications, microwave services, and was a leader in the design and installation of the KBHK 44 transmitter at Sutro Tower. In 1979, while with KRON 4, he was awarded an EMMY for "Outstanding Technical Achievement" for developing the satellite transmission used in the "In Celebration of Tutankhamun" program, produced by KRON 4, which was shown nationwide. With KMGH 7 and KCNC 4 in Colorado and in Ohio with WCMH 4 and WCPO 9 as News/Director of Operations his technical efforts were concentrated on teleconferencing, state-of-the-art microcomputer software systems, and the further development of electronic and mobile satellite newsgathering. He was working with high-definition TV when he retired in 2002. Larry helped turn television into what it is today and inspired many along the way. His wife, Mary Pozzi, a sister, and his extended family survive him.

WOW! I just learned Larry died. I too worked at both "the kids place" and KRON. Larry was a terrific guy and gave me my second and third chance at S.F. Television. He will be forever missed!

Some of the best times of my career in technology were when I worked for Larry at both KBHK and KRON. He was most knowledgeable and had a terrific memory. We kept in touch over the years. I too will miss Larry.

Larry Pozzi was my mentor starting 1977 when he came to KRON TV from KBHK 44. Larry was responsible for me attending Purdue University for NAB broadcast management course and help me advance as the first African-American Engineering Manager in the Bay Area. Larry was a great manager as well as a great Engineer. Larry and his wife, Mary, were fun loving and honest people. I will miss Larry.
