A true San Franciscan has crossed the Golden Gate for the final time.
Leonard Raznick, educator and native of San Francisco, died at home on October 1st, after an heroic battle with cancer. He was 52.
Leonard was born in Ann Arbor, MI and grew up in San Francisco, graduating from Lick-Wilmerding High School. He earned a BA in Sociology from UC Santa Cruz in 1984, and an MA in History from SF State. Leonard was a respected member of the faculty at Herbert Hoover Middle School, and also taught US History at City College of SF.
Leonard's passion for social justice, thirst for travel and knowledge, humorous outlook, respect for the earth, and compassion for his fellow man, led him to a full and inspiring life. He was active in protests against the draft, apartheid in South Africa, and US-led invasions in Central America, Grenada, and the Middle East. He was tireless in his support of human rights, in particular of the poor, the disenfranchised, and the LGBTQ community. Teaching was a natural extension of his social justice work, and also his calling - he mentored his students, educated them about their history, and challenged them to be active, engaged members of society.
Leonard is mourned deeply by a wide circle of family, friends, colleagues, pupils and members of his community. He is survived by his beloved wife Laura, his children Nathan, Peter and Julia, his mother Janet, and his brother Eric.
In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made to a memorial college fund established for Leonard's children. Information is at: http://leonardraznickmemorial.wordpress.com
Leonard's life and memory will be celebrated at Temple Emanu-El on Sunday Oct. 27 at 3 pm. The temple is at 2 Lake Street in San Francisco, and a reception will immediately follow the service.

I met you once when you were very young, but I remember your mother's joy in you. Some day may your family's mourning be complete.

My sympathies and condolences to Mom Janet and Leonard's family and Eric. It was shocking to learn of his way too early passing.in J Weekly. I was at Leonard's Bar Mitzvah and still see the 13 year old in my mind's eye. It wa inspiring and humbling to read about the wonderful man he was and the life he lived . May he rest in peace.

I"m heading to SF today for Leonard's Memorial. What a wonderful, gentle man. I worked alongside of and next door to Leonard for many years at Hoover and can never honestly remember a time where he was not patient, kind, and supportive of everyone, faculty and students alike. My condolences to his family especially as we all remember and celebrate the life of a very good man and human being.

He was a wonderful teacher who cared deeply about his students and his colleagues at Hoover Middle School. I had the honor and privilege to serve as principal at Hoover for seven years, and Leonard was always there for me...providing sage advice and guidance as we struggled through difficult budgetary times. He was a problem solver and team player...and he will be missed. Jeannie Pon, Assistant Superintendent, Middle Schools, SFUSD

When I left UCSC in 1984, I left behind very dear friends, including Leonard. He swept Laura off her feet and made us, her friends, all feel so incredible welcome in his gentle, warm world. They say the best always go first. In this instance, it really is true. Sleep softly, Leonard, we will always remember you. Love, Ruby
