Leonardo Martin Obituary

MARTIN, Leonardo S.J. MD - Died peacefully on Tuesday, Dec 6, at his home in Los Altos. Born Nov. 26, 1925 to Nemesio and Felicidad (San Juan) Martin in Makati, the Philippines. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Helen Mary Dougherty, and his children: Len, John (Janine), David, Mark, Regina Dawson (Michael), and Daniel. Survived also by his brother Jaime; Miriam, Laarni and other nieces and nephews, and four adoring grandchildren: Grace, Joey, Nate and Julie. A respected and admired physician and surgeon at the Sunnyvale Medical Clinic and El Camino Hospital from 1965 to 1993, Leonardo attended the University of Santo Tomas College of Medicine, Class of 1952. Upon coming to America he trained at Philadelphia General, and at Massachusetts General Hospital where he specialized in Urology. He received the Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Philippines Award for medicine in 1960, developed surgical techniques practiced today, and served on the California State Medical Board from 1987 to 2005. His personal achievements throughout his career were overshadowed by his dedication to each patient, his generosity, and a gentle approach to all. He participated in numerous medical missions to the Philippines, in areas of poverty and despair. A humble man of courage and great faith, he put others before himself, was always kindhearted and congenial. He did what God asked of him, was an exceptional husband, father, brother and friend, and will be dearly missed by all who knew him. He enjoyed painting, piano, working with stained glass, was a terrific tennis player and not a bad golfer. His greatest pride was his family, and with all of us present he was able to celebrate and enjoy his 80th birthday. We will remember you always with love and gratitude. Rest in peace. A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, Dec. 12 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Simon Catholic Church, 1860 Grant Rd., Los Altos. Visitations will begin on Sunday, Dec. 11 at 5:00 p.m. with a Vigil at 7:00 p.m. at the Cusimano Family Colonial Mortuary, 96 El Camino Real W., in Mtn. View. Private interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Los Altos. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in his honor to the Camino Medical Group, Camino Division, P.A.M.F., 795 El Camino Real, Palo Alto, CA 94301; The Leonardo S.J. Martin, M.D. Scholarship Fund-Stanford Urology, Attn: J. Graham, 300 Pasteur Dr., Rm. A261, Stanford, CA 94305; or to a charity of your choice.

Thinking about you today, as I still do everyday. This day in particular I am thinking how blessed I was to have you for a father. Even though tears still come easily when I think of you, I miss you so, my heart always smiles at the thought of you as well. Many thanks for the many life lessons, learned for the most part by being witness and recipient to your goodness, generosity, and love. Happy Father's Day. Love you always.

What can be said that hasn't already been said about my Dad. Not only was he a great man, surgeon, family guy, and friend...he was a source of inspiration, free medical advice, guidance, and unconditional giving to not only his family but also his friends.

If I can achieve just a fraction of what he has accomplished during his lifetime...I'd be happy. Hopefully, someday I hope to make him proud of me as I am of him. I miss you Pop.

Love and admiration, your eldest son, Len.

Hi Pop!

You looked resplendent though not your favorite brown suit. Clouds and cold when we all tossed flowers: So ". . .You make me [us] happy, when skies are grey."

What privilege and elation when told of how you affected other lives.

It is not easy to attain your creed: Do your best unto others.

But LOVE ALWAYS.

My Uncle Leonardo lived on the other side of the country from me so I wasn't able to see him as much as I had wished. However.....I have some VERY fond memories of him as a child. He was a loving, compassionate man. I will miss him. My love and prayers got out to my Aunt and cousins.

Love,

Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Martin family. Although we did not have the honor of meeting Mr. Martin during his life, we know how much he is loved and adored by his daughter Gina, husband Michael and kids - Julie and Nate. Len, our wonderful neighbor for 29 years, we miss you. The tennis, the dinners and happpy celebrations are treasured memories. You inspired our son, John to go into medicine and your quiet, warm humor influenced us all. We hold you in our hearts.
