Lester Campbell Obituary

Dr. Lester Stanley Campbell "SKIP" Feb. 1, 1937 - Dec. 17, 2010 Born in St Petersburg, Florida to Sidney, Sr. and Viola Lester Campbell, Les was the seventh of seven children. He attended the public schools of Pinellas County Florida where he was an exceptional football player at Gibbs High School. He was honored as the only player in the Florida Interscholastic Athletic Association to be named All-State on the offensive and defensive teams. After attending college at Fisk University, Tennessee A. & L State University, and Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach, Florida, he graduated with a degree in chemistry. Although he suffered a career - ending injury entering college, his love for the game of football led him to begin coaching at his former high school. Eventually, he relocated to San Francisco, California in 1965 where he was employed with the Hoffman LaRoche Pharmaceutical Company. His passion for education led him to a position with the San Matco Elementary School District where he taught several notable individuals, i.e., actor, Dennis Haysbert and football star, Lynn Swann. Les moved from the San Mateo Elementary School District to the San Mateo County Community College District as an administrator of the Student Development Program at Canada College. Les pursued and achieved a Ph.D. degree in Clinical Psychology and moved to Skyline College to teach psychology. While teaching at Skyline, he also began a career with the Kaiser Permanente Hospital as a clinical psychologist which eventually led to establishing his private practice in San Bruno, California. Other than being an avid sports fan, Les enjoyed his German Shepherd dogs, all music - especially jazz, soul, and rhythm and blues. He was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. He is predeceased by his parents, a son, a daughter, his sister, and three brothers. Les is survived by his devoted wife of 40 years, Shirley, son: Brian and wife Lisa of San Mateo; daughters: Lea Black and husband Dr. Justin Black of Chicago, IL; Angela Davis and husband Donald of Denver, CO; two brothers: Martin of St Petersburg, FL; Alphonso (Kathryn) of South San Francisco, CA. Also surviving are grandchildren, great grandchildren, one aunt, Bernice Lester of St Petersburg, FL, many nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family wishes to thank the medical staff of the Kaiser Permanente Hospital in South San Francisco, CA for caring for Lester the six weeks he was there. Visitation will be at the Bryant Mortuary on Tuesday, 12/28/10 from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. After which visits will continue at Third Baptist Church, 1399 McAllister Street, San Francisco, CA where the family will gather for the Quiet Hour at 7p.m. Funeral services will be at Third Baptist Church on Wednesday, 12/29/10 at 11 a.m. Interment will be at Cypress Lawn Memorial Park followed by a repast at Third Baptist Church.

Dr. Campbell saved my life. My first encounter with him was in 1974 at Kaiser in San Francisco. No matter what I was doing, where I was or what I was going thru, he found time for me. Though there were years in between seeing him, he never ever forgot who I was or where I came from. He truly enabled me to become a very strong woman and that I am forever grateful. Thank you for sharing him with others. He will always be remembered.
