Lester Ching Obituary

Lester C. Ching 89, passed away in San Francisco on January 28, 2010. Born in Oakland and raised in San Francisco, Lester was a member of the 1938 class of the High School of Commerce. A proud World War II Veteran, Lester served on three ships in the Pacific Theater (1942-1945). He was 1964-65 Post Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Chinatown Post 4618, a member of the VFW of California and VFW of the United States. Lester was active with the Masons and Shriners, and in 1972, served as Master of Doric Lodge 216. In 1983, Lester retired from the Bechtel Corporation after 19 years, two of which were spent in Taiwan. At the Golden Gate International Exposition, Lester filled in at the last minute, dressed as Chinese royalty. With a smile, he would recall this incident as a unique experience. Not an avid golfer but he did enjoy playing when he could. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Ella, who passed away in 1995, after 53 years of marriage. He is survived by daughters, Diana (Ben), Linda (Gene), Leslie; granddaughters, Tracy (Kevin), Leanna, Karyn (Brandon); and special friend, Winifred. The family thanks the staff of Kaiser's SSF facility, SF Hospice Program and the Neptune Society for their care and support. Lester and Ella's ashes are interred in the Neptune Society's Columbarium. A private family ceremony was held on March 3.

We will always remember him as the coolest uncle, debonaire, trim, and well dressed. May he rest in peace. Condolences to the Family.
