Maggie McCall Obituary

Maggie McCall aka Marjorie A. Bobu, a San Francisco native, peacefully passed away in this City on Monday, March 16, 2009. Maggie was a long-time journalist, editor and publisher of the Marina Times from 1989 to 2002, and co-founder of the San Francisco Neighborhood Newspaper Association. Her love of newspapers and the written word led to a life committed to the press and its pursuits, beginning in her younger days at the News Call Bulletin followed by the S.F. Chronicle. Maggie not only had a passion for reading and writing, but also for traveling. In the mid-sixties, she and her husband with children in tow undertook a sixteen-year journey working their way around the world in a time when travel was still largely by passenger liner and steamer trunks. The family returned in the early eighties and in 1989 she started the Marina Times, a family-owned and operated neighborhood newspaper, which was brought to life by her and by the community the paper served. Maggie was diagnosed with lung cancer several years ago. She fought resiliently, but ultimately lost her battle against cancer, its side effects and Alzheimers. She is survived by her loving family: husband, Sam; children, Stacy and Kenneth; sister, Nadine; nephews, Bill and Malcolm; and, grandson, Matthew. A private sea scattering of her ashes will take place honoring her memory. Donations are appreciated, and may be made to either St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or to the Hospice by the Bay, 1902 Van Ness Avenue, 2nd Floor, San Francisco, CA 94109.
