My family and I are deeply saddened to hear of Mahesh's untimely passing.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, children, mother, and sister.

Dear Vyji,
I am so sad to hear of Mahesh's passing.
I worked with him several years ago at UCSF and always enjoyed his calmness, no matter the chaos that was going on in Clinic.
I occasionally ran into him at Peet's and he always took a few minutes to catch up with my family.
I am so sorry for you, for your children, and the entire community, that we've lost this lovely man.
Sincerely,
Ilana

I met Mahesh when i was a medical student at Univ. of Chicago. He was one of those people who was kind, thoughtful, generous, and caring. This is a huge loss to the San Francisco medical community and of course to his family. Very few people are as pure in "goodness" as Mahesh. I am very sorry for this loss to all who knew and loved him - especially his family.

Dr. Mankani was my Husband's hand surgeon after a terrible motorcycle collision. He was always exceedingly kind to my Husband and went well above and beyond to help us with my husband's other treatments. He is mourned by us both today. Our deepest condolences to his family.

Mary and I got to really know Mahesh when we were all together in Chicago in 1980s/90s during residency.
He used to come over for dinners, or we would all head out for a movie on weekends.
He was our first friend to hold Katie, our daughter, shortly after her birth.
In addition to country western music, he was passionate about delta blues.
We had a few outings to blues club in rather unsavory, scary neighborhoods in Chicago.
He was always generous to his friends.
Mary reminded me that he gave us some of the most practical gifts for a young couple; our first phone answering machine, a baby car seat.
Now, how many single guy would be thoughtful enough to come up with a baby car seat before the father could buy one?
Like us, Mahesh was a foodie.
We discovered some great restaurants together in Chicago.
I also remembered once, he was in New Haven for an interview, he brought back to Mary and I a Pepe's Pizza.
We loved Pepe's pizza and had brought him there when we were in New Haven.
That was such a thoughtful gift, flying back to Chicago with a fresh Pepe pizza!
I can't believe he is gone now, just like that.
He will be missed by all of his friends, trainees, colleagues, and especially, his family.

Dear Vyji
As I sit here in Jerusalem reflecting on Mahesh and his life, one word comes to mind: integrity. He was completely honest in his personal and professional life and valued you, the children and his family above all else. He was a dedicated and skilled surgeon and a brilliant scholar and scientist. He had the decency and self confidence to persevere in the face of adversity. I had both great affection and great respect for him as a man and a surgeon. Gisela and I send you, the children and your family our love and every good wish at this most difficult time.

I am so shocked at Manish's untimely death. We worked together at Laguna Honda Hospital and he was wonderful to work with and although I did not have a chance to know him personally..am sure that he was a caring and affectionate man to all those close to him..I can only say that such people leave indelible footprints in the wake of their work and will always be treasured and are irreplaceable. May his immediate family find some peace in that he was respected and loved by those that knew him at work and whose lives were changed positively forever. I will miss him and pray that he was peaceful somehow in his last moments ...a life cut too short.
