Mario Basso Obituary

Mario L. Basso

Mario passed away June 27 2016 in peace at 95 years. He loved life, particularly family and friends.
Mario was born to Angelo and Anna Ingrassia Basso in San Francisco. Both of his parents emigrated from Sicily and he was always proud of his Sicilian heritage. He visited relatives in Sicily and loved family and friends there. He was also proud to be a native of San Francisco. He was raised in Glen Park and always had affection for the area and the life of his young years.
He was graduated from Lowell High School and later San Francisco City College. Upon graduating from City College in 1941 he joined the Navy and spent the WWII years in the Pacific on a Destroyer where he served as chief petty officer. He always said those years had a major influence on him. He kept in contact with many of the men with whom he served up until his death.
Three days after his discharge from the Navy, he opened his independent insurance brokers business Mario L. Basso Co. He loved his work making many friends with clients and insurance associates. He was highly respected for his integrity and work ethic.
He was member of the Olympic Club for 61 years where he enjoyed golf and playing dominos with friends. The Club was always a big part of his life. He was there two times a week until the week before his death.
He was preceded in death by siblings Gaetano Basso, Cosimo Basso, Mary Phillips, Joan Coyle and his 1st wife and mother of his children, Bernice Basso. He is survived by his children Dr Vicky Campagna, Bruce Basso, (Lorna), Patrice Basso, grandchildren Joe Campagna, Nick Basso (Melissa), Dr Nina Campagna (Tim Heath), Katherine Basso and his wife Carolyn Basso. It was very important to him that he got to enjoy a great granddaughter Bailey Montana Basso. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.
A private mass will be held at St Bartholews parish in San Mateo where he was a member for many years.

I was sad to hear about Mr. Basso passed away. I always bragged to my family and friends that I was lucky to work for Mr. Basso. I was very happy and honored when I saw Mr. Basso and Carolyn while walking on the aisle who attended my wedding but did not get a chance to talk to him, left early because of his health. He was the kindest, gentle, caring and generous person. He will always in my heart and will be missed, but I know he is now in a better place. May He Rest in Peace. - Lilia Quandt-Kolodziej
