Mark Rubinstein Obituary

Mark Rubinstein

Mark Rubinstein, a Berkeley professor of finance, whose academic ideas had a profound impact on Wall Street practice, died in his home on May 9th in Tiburon, CA, at the age of 74. Rubinstein was intellectually fearless and known by many of his students as a sincere mentor who had extraordinary passion. As a quintessential Renaissance man, his curiosity and love of learning led him down diverse pathways, including acquiring an impressive knowledge of Ancient Greek and Roman history and his beloved Shakespeare. He grew up in Seattle, the son of Sam and Gladys Rubinstein, and went to Lakeside High School. After receiving a B.A. at Harvard, an MBA at Stanford and a Ph.D. at UCLA, Rubinstein joined the Haas Business School at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1972.
He is survived and dearly missed by his wife Diane, and his children Judd and Maisie. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 9, 1:30 p.m., at the Fernwood Mortuary in Mill Valley, California.

"I wish there was more time for us. I would've loved to get to know my big brother. May your memory be a blessing."

I first met Mark in 1980. I had already read some of his papers by then. He had made extremely important contributions to the theory of finance by then and was the world's top academic expert on the pricing and trading of options. He was my boss for one year as I was editor of the Journal of Finance and he was President of the American Finance Association. Throughout the years I knew him, he always impressed me as a phenomenal scholar but also a great human being. My field would not be what it is today without him and I would not be the same. May the family be comforted by looking forward to seeing your dear loved one again as promised made by Jesus and recorded at John 6:40.

Mark, Brig, and I spent wonderful years together at Lakeside, beginning in 7th grade. Mark lived in a beautiful home on Lake Washington and would invite me over from time-to-time. I always refused, knowing I would have to reciprocate. I was embarrassed of my family's home. One Saturday morning as I was dressing for a baseball game, I heard my Mom say, "There is someone here to see you." It was Mark. He immediately put me at ease and of course, honest as he was, scolded me for not inviting him over sooner. It is among the kindest things anyone has ever done for me. My family recognized the gift Mark had given me, and always held him close to their hearts. My father always referred to him as Ruby.

During my college years, Mark arranged for me to work for his father's canning business in Alaska. We shared one summer together in Alaska producing salmon roe and caviar for human consumption in Japan. If memory serves, Mark did his bachelor's thesis at Harvard on the salmon canning industry.

Regrettably, Mark and I lost touch over the years, but there is no doubt in my mind that the affection we had for each other remained in tact. It fills my heart now.

I hope Mark's family and friends are comforted by this remembrance and my thoughts are with you in memory of Mark's life.
