Martin Connelly Obituary

Martin Francis Connelly
03/22/1932 - 07/02/2024
Martin Francis Connelly, 92 passed away peacefully at his home in Menlo Park on July 2nd, 2024. The only child of Joseph and Mabel (née Garrity), Martin was born in Santa Barbara on March 22, 1932. He had a distinguished and impactful career in media and sales. Before retirement, Martin was CEO of FitCom, a company committed to health and fitness for corporations. He also was a consultant to the Board of Directors of Disney. Previously, he was President and CEO of Delta Television Corporation in Memphis from 1980 until its sale in 1986. During the 70s, he was President and CEO of Petry Television Inc (NYC) a then-leading U.S. advertising sales representation firm which served more than 150 television stations in 35 states. Before this time, he held various roles at Metromedia, including Executive VP and General Manager of KTTV Channel 11(LA) and Executive VP of Sales and Marketing, NYC.
A visionary and compassionate leader, Martin was always invested in the development of those around him, and in their success in both their business and personal lives. This generosity of spirit extended well past his career. After retirement, he followed his passions. He acquired his M.A. (Psychology) at USF and eventually worked there as Guest Lecturer and Adjunct Professor. He also became involved with Veterans Affairs Palo Alto, Menlo Park and was consultant to the Black Coaches Association (NCAA). An avid athlete, he was twice a Golden Gloves champion, ran 10 NY Marathons, and fitness was always a part of his life.
Martin is survived by his beloved wife, Priscilla Lee, of 43 years. In their early years, they resided at the historic Hotel des Artistes, and spent summers in their ranch in Sedalia, Colorado. Eventually, Martin and Priscilla made their home in Northern California, where he grew up. Through the years, they were always accompanied by their succession of cherished dogs: Khan, Shandor, Shasta, and Cara. Their homes were visited by family and friends whose lives were enriched by their warmth and generosity. When asked the secret to having a happy life, Martin replied, "I would say honesty, trust, humor, good food and a great wife. I grew up having a small family, so you have become my family."
Deepest gratitude to our loving sister Daphne, your unwavering support and presence is invaluable. Tony Han your dedication and kindness has been a source of great comfort. And to Dr. Kathryn Saxton, her staff at Oakwood Medical and Nurse Freba, your compassionate care and professionalism has made a significant difference during this challenging time. Further recognition goes to Mission Hospice, Dr. Gary Pasternek, Sara Martinez, Triage Nurse Trudy Brady, Ludmila Tesarkova, Becca Hayton, Tommy Joe and partner Gina.

Marty was a powerhouse and a champion any field of endeavor he entered. He gave me my personal opportunity in the television representation business when he hired me as a sales trainee in Washington DC. I learned more from him than I could ever ever imagined. He also sparkled as the owner of Petry television and later in life as a psychologist with a blue ribbon of clients. A handsome man and a gifted athlete. He will be famous as long as people have the power to remember... he gave me my start... Jim Coppersmith.

Marty was the man who gave me my first opportunity in the broadcast business way back in 1965 when he hired and tested and unproven 32 year-old Jim Coppersmith to be a sales trainee at WTTG in Washington DC. I can say without fear of contradiction that I learned more from him than anyone else in the industry. He was always will remain a giant force in the broadcast business and a major influence on my life. His life was so spectacular, and he will always be irreplaceable. Deepest sympathies and condolences to wife, Priscilla and rest in peace old friend. You will never be forgotten Jim Coppersmith.

He was a very special; memorable person who was a natural born leader. Charismatic; and a real professional. A unique manager who always demanded the best from his people which made them smarter and more creative. Sorry that I lost touch and my condolences to Priscilla!

I knew Marty because a friend of mine, Grayce, worked for him in NY. We had the pleasure of the company of Marty and his wife Priscilla on a few occasions in the late 60's and early 70's. Sympathies to Priscilla.
