Marty Springer Obituary

Marty Rose Springer
Sept 8, 1949 - Nov 8, 2020
Marty Rose Springer died peacefully at home in Redwood City after a 14-month bout with bile duct cancer. She is survived by her wife of 22 years, Keldyn West, her aunt, Annette Felder Carrel, and cousins David, Laura, and Jason Carrel and their families. Marty's infectious joy, kindness, and laughter will be remembered and greatly missed by the many friends whom she held so dear.

Marty was born in San Francisco and always drew energy from this place. She grew up in Alameda. She attended UC Santa Cruz, receiving a BA in Aesthetic Studies Specializing in Photography. She was a professional photographer and a photography teacher. She believed in the value of community art classes and taught thousands of students over the years. Student could come to her class with any kind of camera, and she would teach them to use it both technically and, more importantly, to find their own artistic voices. She believed that everyone is an artist. Marty curated an annual photography show called Localvision from 1994 to 2019. Localvision gave her students a place to share their work and vision, but its true essence was about building community and connecting people.

Marty often said that her happiest day was the day that she and her beloved were finally allowed to marry, February 13, 2004, when SF Mayor Newsom took a stand for human rights. They waited all day for a marriage license in a line that snaked through City Hall, a space filled with the tangible love and joy of so many other couples who had also been waiting for this day, some for decades.

Marty was funny, generous, fierce, and wise. She also did not take crap from anyone. She was passionate about social justice, nature, music, and people. She loved random road trips with her wife, their trips to Alaska, time with friends, and season seats at both the SF Opera and the West Bay Opera. She enjoyed hosting parties, delighting in introducing friends who she thought should meet. She also enjoyed random strangers. If we lost her in a crowd, she would reappear with an old person attached to her arm who needed support. If asked for money on the street, she would often oblige, ask their names, shake their hands, and wish them well.

Marty always chose to focus on joy and gratitude, right up through her final days. She was grateful for those who guided her through the early years, including her grandparents, Louis and Rose Felder, and her aunt Annette, as well as those she met and loved along the whole of her journey. When her mother, Mary Lou Felder Springer, had brain cancer in 1991, Marty was grateful to be able to care for her, protect her, and come to a place of peace and connection. And as with so many of her experiences, she used what she learned to help others along the path.

We will gather for a Celebration of Life after we all have our vaccinations. For those wishing to make a contribution in her memory, we suggest the wbopera.org or CenterForCommonGround.org fighting voter suppression.

I am so sorry to see that Marty has passed. We had lost touch years ago but I remember meeting her through mutual friends in Santa Cruz. We ended up bonding over losing our mothers to cancer, love of opera and attending the Stanford Pow Wow. She was truly a light in this world. My deepest condolences to Keldyn and family. My thoughts are with all of you navigating this world without Marty in it.

On the 5th anniversary of my own son's death, I was taken aback by reading about Marty's death in the Sunday Chron.
Marty was a wonderful teacher and such a kind person. She always showed encouragement and I am grateful for having known her. Dear Keldyn, I know you were the light in her life.

My heart goes out to Keldyn and to Marty’s family at this time.

Rarely does someone come into your life that alters it for the better. Marty fell into that category for me. As one of her many students, she unleashed my potential as a photographer that has allowed me to capture treasured moments of my family and friends.

Marty set an example for living one’s life too. To illustrate this point, any exchange with Marty always involved a question about the wellbeing of my son and fellow photography class alum Trevor. Her patience in serving others in her photography class was to be admired as well.

The last time I contacted Marty it was to teach an iPhone photography workshop at my company, an invitation she declined to travel with Keldyn instead. In typical Marty fashion, she encouraged me to teach the class closing her e-mail with the words: “Keep it real simple and fun, Love Marty”. In the end, over 300 people attended the video conference workshops in the US and in Europe with more sessions planned in 2021. I never would have had this experience without Marty’s support and I now feel it in a small way continues her legacy of community and connecting people.

Thank you Marty for the positive changes you have made in my life.

Marty was always so nice and thoughtful. We laughed at our 50th HS Reunion that I bought the same outfit she was wearing but chose another outfit just before the reunion at the last minute. I’m so glad she had a good marriage and a good life. She was talented and thoughtful and a joy to be with. RIP sweet Marty Springer. I’m glad we shared a good conversation at the reunion and connected again on Facebook.

She was such a kind-hearted person inside and out. I was lucky to have been one of her photography students in 2018 and will forever be grateful for the beauty she not only brought to photography but to the beauty she ignited within all of us as artists. She left us way too soon but a special prayer as she BEGINS her Rest In Peace.

I am so happy that I was able to be back in touch with Dear Marty after 50 years, and was able to spend some time with her and Keldyn exactly two years ago. Marty was as loving, sensitive, creative, and generous as I remembered her. She was very in touch with nature, and took me to Point Reyes for my very first time. I will always remember her there. My sincere condolences to you, Keldyn. Please advise me when her memorial service is held. I very much want to attend.

What a wise and wonderful woman Marty was. I knew her only through our shared political activism, but felt such a genuine sense of caring and connection from her - I think everyone did. I will miss her so much!
