Matthew Goettsch Obituary

Matthew Adam Goettsch Oct. 17, 1980 - Jan. 29, 2011 Matt entered this world on October 17, 1980, and departed on January 29, 2011, from injuries suffered in a skiing accident. Matt was an excellent athlete that excelled in football and soccer. He loved the outdoors and was an avid skier and hiker. Heavenly Valley and Yosemite were among his favorite places to go, especially in the company of many good friends. His competitive spirit, quick wit, and warm heart made him the kind of person you always wanted on your team. He graduated from the University of California, Davis with degrees in both Political Science and Philosophy. He then attended University of San Francisco and earned his law degree. Since that time Matt worked as an attorney at Van de Poel, Levy & Allen, LLP in Walnut Creek, CA. He loved his job and the strong relationships he formed with his associates. Matt is survived by his long time girlfriend, Cindy Gutierrez, his father, Dennis and his wife Nancy, his brother Jeff and his wife Pam, his sister Lindsay, his paternal grandparents, Orville and Colette Goettsch, and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his mother, Joyce in 2000. He will be sorely missed by each and everyone of them. There will be a memorial service to celebrate Matt's life, followed by a reception at the Lone Tree Golf Course Event Center, 4800 Golf Course Rd, Antioch, at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 5, 2011. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the American Cancer Society.

To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.

This is such a shock. I had the pleasure of working with Matt on several litigation inspections. My most fond memory is of Matt running off during long breaks to work out, then eating turkey jerky for his lunch. I would reprimand him but he was so young, in great shape, and seemingly invincible. I found a couple of old photos of Matt from jobs past. So long Matt. You made the world a better place during your short visit here.

My Tribute to Matt Goettsch

Six or seven years ago I met Matt and was immediately drawn to his warmth, openess, and maturity.

It was August of 2004 when we went camping at Clear Lake. Matt was starting law school at USF later that month. I remember being so excited for him. I wanted to know everything about law school. Looking back I was living vicariously through Matt. He was everthing I wanted to be in an earlier life.

Matt had no fear. He knew the direction he was headed and he would get there without any forks in the road. Everytime we would meet, whether for birthdays,Thanksgiving, or Christmas we would talk about his classes, and dive into current events (politics).

Although I felt I was right because I was "older", Matt had "light years" of intelligence on me. Now, that's not undermining my own intelligence. That's just accepting his ability to win a debate.

I remember Matt and his unselfish desire to make kids laugh. Angelina would love to be with Matt. No one else. It was Matt. He was fun, strong, and energetic. Every kids dream. He never tired of it. Every event, it was Matt and Angelina. So much fun. Then Javi came along. Now Matt had two kids to deal with. He did it with enthusiasm.

I look upon this tragedy and wonder why? Why? How could this happen? Not only have we lost a brother, a son, a husband, a friend. But the world has lost a "piece of a jigsaw puzzle".

In sports we always refer to a hard loss as "should, could, and would have". In Matt, "should have" means we were cheated at something. Yes we were! We were cheated to see him grow even more. "Could have" means what Matt's potential was but will never be achieved, at least in this world. "Would have" is what he was destined to achieve. With his dedication and determination he would have captured the world. Whatever his desire he would have succeeded.

As humans we feel cheated. We feel we were deprived at what should have been. We feel lost at what would have been.

I write this as my own tribute to Matt. I thank him for touching my heart for as brief as it was. And as brief as it was, I feel for those who knew him more intimately than me. Your sorrow and hurt as so much greater than mine.

God bless you Matt. I will miss you so much. Thank you for being my friend.

With all my heart,

Ken Lauranzano

Dear Goettsch Family~

I played rec soccer with your son (and Cindy) during our time at USF Law. I fondly remember he was so dedicated to his workout regime that he religiously carried a giant water jug around campus each day. Matt was very much the picture of health and elite fitness. He was also a great team player and a really fun person, always joking with classmates and livening up things for his friends.

I am so sorry - this is a tragic loss for you and for the USF Law community.

My most sincere condolences go out to you during this tremendously difficult time. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.
