Mei-Ling Kwei Obituary

Mei-Ling Kwei
05/06/1928 - 07/18/2025
Dr. Mei-Ling Kwei, a dedicated Psychiatrist and beloved sister, passed away peacefully on July 18, 2025, in Merced, California, at the age of 97.
Born in Shanghai, China, on May 6, 1928, Mei-Ling pursued a life of compassion and service. She immigrated to the United States and earned her medical degree from Stanford University School of Medicine in 1955, a remarkable achievement for a woman of her time. She went on to practice psychiatry in San Francisco and was one of the founders of the first Chinese mental health clinic in Chinatown. Dr. Kwei cared deeply for her patients and was known for her thoughtful, humanistic approach to mental health.
Dr. Kwei made San Francisco her lifelong home, where she cultivated a quiet strength, a sharp intellect, and a deep commitment to her profession. She cherished her 33 years of marriage to Robert Hildreth (deceased).
She is survived by her half-brothers, Wallen Summers and Thomas Kwei, along with extended family, colleagues, and friends who admired her integrity, intelligence, and warmth.
